this is really great, and i'm glad that you're thinking about it!! I just started building @atmobb.app and wanted to build a way for it to pull in topics from similar forums and landed on subscribing to a "topic" for those forums. very excited to see what happens!!

Admin panel for atmobb.app, a new forum system built on top of the atmosphere. It's showing opting in to a "topic" for a forum, where all similarly set forums with that topic will show topics in common.

Working on documentation for atmoBB including the real reason I wanted to build this: access to private data ✨ Right now it's pretty simple (just the threads) and it's all tied to the forum 'account' that owns the forum data (styles, forums and categories) but I could see this being awesome

Members-only boards

A board is either public or members-only. Public is the default: threads and replies are ordinary records in their authors' repos, on the firehose, indexed by anyone. Flipping a board to members-only moves its content into a Happyview permissioned space: a server-enforced container that never touches the firehose and is only readable and writable by its member list.

One space per private board. The space is keyed by the board's rkey (at://<forum-did>/space/app.atmobb.forum.privateBoard/<board-rkey>), the forum account is its authority, and its mint policy is member-list. The board record itself stays public and grows an access field pointing at the space.
What's private and what isn't

Private: thread and reply content, titles included, plus who posted what. Space records live inside the Happyview instance and are served only to members.

Still public, by design:

The board's existence, name, and description (the board record is a public record in the forum's repo).
Access requests. Asking to join writes an app.atmobb.forum.accessRequest record into the requester's own public repo. Anyone watching the firehose can see who asked to join which board.
The approve and deny decisions, which are app.atmobb.moderation.action records (grantAccess / denyAccess) in the forum's public repo.

If a board's membership itself needs to be secret, this design doesn't provide that.
Reading and writing

Space content bypasses the normal index entirely. Page loads assemble a private board live from the space (src/lib/server/space-read.ts): list the member repos in the space, list their thread and reply records, fetch each one, all as the viewing member. Author profiles still come from the public index, and post counts shown on a private board are per-board standing, since the public post count never sees space records.

I'm relying on a kind of tagging system. You can opt a forum into pulling from the atmosphere, and you tag it (e.g. "music") and then any other forum tagged "music" shows up. Very simple to start with

it is very cool to be able to say this. the back-end is down, but all of the data is just.... out there and safe. even if the site never came back, ppl could easily build a replica

yes i am still building the "fun" simulator that lets you run for any office in the country and a full stock simulator almost everything is a placeholder and it still takes about 13 seconds to process on my very powerful computer when i try to move forward a day 🙃
