Former Meta executive turned whistleblower and advocate for kids' online safety, common sense tech regulations, suicide prevention, healthcare equity, and safer workplaces for those on the margins. AuDHD, MCAS, POTS, EDS overturned.substack.com
How did Meta transform from a customer-obsessed company out to change the world and into a company that only cares about itself and is threatening the world? Because they had to, because they can. Like I told @newsnation.bsky.social, @doctorow.pluralistic.net's Enshittification is req'd reading.
Whether Meta chooses to withdraw or pay and change, the more jurisdictions that follow New Mexico’s lead, the harder it will be for Meta to continue harming our kids.
But didn’t Meta say they’d leave New Mexico if forced to change?
BREAKING Meta was just ordered to pay an additional $567 million to New Mexico so that the state can address the harm caused to kids by their products. Between this judgment and the $375 million of damages awarded in the trial, Meta owes New Mexico nearly a billion dollars!
👇🏻Meta says “we can meddle in political issues, but you can’t… especially not the bipartisan issue of addressing the harms we cause!”
While minimum social media age requirements are important first steps, they depend on partnership from tech companies and don't address the harmful product design directly. This is what I’ve explained in my Project Syndicate article that came out this week. overturned.substack.com/i/207849403/...

Meta would like you to think I'm making it all up, but this timeline of accounts and reports from disconnected people and organizations over the past year makes it clear that these assertions aren't coming out of thin air. #metaknows Read more: open.substack.com/pub/overturn...

And thank you Senator @vandanaslatter.bsky.social for your question
My recent WA Senate testimony was shared on Blind, and no I haven’t been paid by random sponsors to testify (wouldn’t that be nice?). This work has been at a huge personal cost—in all the ways. No payouts for FTC testimony, mtgs with congressional staff, state level advocacy, or anything else.
It was a privilege to testify before the Washington Senate's Business, Trade, and Economic Development Committee this morning in support of SB 5708, which would protect kids in WA from predatory, addictive feeds and notifications while at school and sleeping. #meta #bigtech #mentalhealth Part 1/3
Hello Bluesky 👋🏼 Here are four of my posts from the last year. If you care about standing up to toxic systems of power, neutering patriarchy, and truth telling in the face of fear, I hope you’ll subscribe to Overturned on Substack.
My friend and former Meta colleague Brian Boland and I spoke with Ricky Sutton about Australia’s new social media delay for kids under 16, and pushback to this regulation, including the suggestion that this is a parenting issue, not govt. I’ll share the full conversation on Substack this week.
Apple knows better, so today we demanded that they do better. Parent survivors, former tech workers, and child safety advocates worldwide mobilized with Heat Initiative to highlight unsafe products and demand accountability from Apple. We had three demands:
