A beautiful Astoria formation exposure we took a look at during a recent road trip along the Oregon coast. The site sees a lot of fossil hunting activity but we still found some neat bivalves! #fossilfriday
We had a little Oregon getaway this past week. We combed some beautiful rocky beaches and found a few goodies here and there. Petrified wood, agates, chalcedony in pieces of host rock. Two pictures are of a basalt boulder just full of agate-filled cavities. Wish I could’ve taken it! 😫😂 #rockhound
One of my favorite stretches of Big Creek in Wa. The trout fishing here is sometimes as amazing as the scenery. It was yesterday morning for sure! Caught and released some nice ones.
Took this picture of Mt. Ranier today. We were on a bike trail near the Green River in Kent Wa. The trail runs through an industrial area of the town hence the structures there. The least impeded shot to be found.
We had friends visiting for the long weekend. Took them for a walk on the Westport pier. Couldn’t get a clear picture but the first one is a mother harbor seal with a brand new pup! A nice walk along a nearby river and some time at a beach. I found a nice little carnelian there.
We spotted some mushrooms on a little hike around Lake Sylvia in Washington yesterday. Didn’t pick any but I was wondering if they were oysters. My research indicates they are not but are probably angel wings. Some sources say edible some say they might make one sick. Pretty anyhow! #fungifriends
Happy Birthday! Here is a shot of some shark/ptychodus teeth collected in Sherman,Tx. My favorites because they remind me of good times sifting through the creek gravels.
Coincidentally, I’ve been looking for a good fritters recipe! I took up clam digging since retirement like I needed another hobby. These Pacific razor clams have tender parts that are great for clam strips and po’ boys but I’m betting the chewier parts will be great in this! Thank you.
I’m really liking all of the green mineral posts on here this St. Patrick’s Day. ☘️ Here’s a nice, big, green chunk of diopside/calcite I collected the last time I visited the Adirondacks. I had to leave it behind with family as it was too big to take on the plane! #rockhound #minerals
My sister gave us a mushroom-growing kit and I must say it’s been quite fun! This is the second batch so far. They are pioppinos and are about as tasty as some of the wild mushrooms we forage around here. #fungifriends
We actually had a nice, sunny day today after many days of rain. My girlfriend and I took advantage of it to go for a nice walk on the beach. She found this small orbicular jasper out there and I think it’s one of the coolest rocks either one of us has found around here! #rockhound
I decided to tumble a barrel of strictly petrified wood last week. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it up to change to the next grit! The 4 smaller pieces are from PNW beaches. The large one I picked up rock hounding on a friend’s ranch near San Antonio when I lived in Tx. #rockhound
We had a fun time at our local No Kings march today. I think there may have been a few more people this time and far less negative reactions from passing motorists.
It wasn’t a very good year for chanterelles where we live because of the lack of rainfall. We only found a few here and there. We did find a really good spot for boletus edulis though! We had a heck of a good time in the woods today. #fungifriends #mushrooms #foraging
