There's a Tyutchev poem that you'd probably knew if you grew up with nerdy Russian parents (me) and it's one of my favorites and like most of my favorite things it's mostly about struggling with/against/for desire.

Jotting down ideas for my player circles mechanic, which I'm pretty sure comes from Burning Wheel and was perhaps my favorite part. (Though I didn't play it so no idea how it works irl!) There aren't really mechanics for it yet so it's mostly viiiibes but I'm curious if people have thoughts on them!

Characters in Snakebite are organized into “circles.” A circle represents a group of acquaintances--siblings, cousins, friends, war buddies, business partners--whose stories overlap frequently enough that what happens to one affects the others.
To play Snakebite, you must first generate a Circle, which consists of at least 3 characters. Develop them via the character creation rules below. Once finished, determine how they are related to one another. Be creative, but know that in Snakebite, all warriors and treasure-seekers share a fraternal hunger for wealth, and bond easily while recuperating in the city. “Drinking buddy” or “fellow treasure-hunter” are by far the most common bonds between such men and women.
Players control a single member of their circle at a time. While playing a character, the other members of the circle exist as background NPC’s, controlled (if it matters) by the GM but generally inactive in the current story, occupied by their own adventures and exploits.
If, however, the currently-played character suffers an egregious injury, is killed or captured by hostile forces, driven mad, entombed alive, or lost in any of the countless ways adventurers can be lost in Taurica, you ‘activate’ a member of the circle, and they become the currently-played character. The death, loss, or injury of the previous character draws the newly-controlled character involved in the events of the story and they pick up where their friend left off. They may seek to rescue them, avenge them, recover valuable items from their body, or simply acquire the treasure their friend died pursuing.
If a Circle drops below 3-4 members, replenish it when you have time. Snakebite is a crowded city, and friends of friends arrive every day, in search of treasure and glory. In a pinch, you can borrow characters from another player’s circle--this is a sign you need to expand your own circle and possibly play more cautiously!

Elves were created by the dragons as an attempt to copy and improve on humanity. It is unclear if captured humans were used as stock, or elves were created wholesale--the species share many similar features, but are highly biologically distinct. The elves were taught the Rhea Minor language of the dragons; a simplified version of their vastly-complex system, now referred to as “Elven.” True Draconic--the Rhea Magna-- has an alphabet with 1024 characters, each chosen for specific semiotic purposes, while Elven has a mere 64. It is nearly impossible for most humans to even detect the nuance requisite in Elven speech; conversely, elves struggle with the graceless grunting of Jotn and very few attempt to learn it.
Elves are much more slender and somewhat shorter than humans, and their legs are slightly longer relative to their torsos. They have small, gentle ears, noses, and mouths, but large, wide eyes. Their teeth are similar to those of humans, though sharper and stronger, with prominent canines. Combined with their sinuous agility, elves are often said to have a serpentine aspect.
Though elves are usually seen as strikingly beautiful, they are also unsettling and uncanny. They speak slowly, calculate heavily, and tend to operate at two speeds: meditative and flurry. They are, as a rule, more intelligent and analytical than humans, though less ambitious, curious, and creative.
Elves wear their hair very long and adorn themselves with wide arrays of jewelry, ribbons, and similar accessories; favoring glass and silver over other stones and metals. They value swordsmanship, particularly

MM paperbacks still circulate really really fast. I can put out a couple rows like this and they'll be mostly gone in a day. They don't hold up well so I get why they're not being printed in bulk anymore but yeah, there's definitely still demand!

So I found this kinda neat old thing yesterday and took it home and started reading the English translation line by line with the fraktur. Its the memoirs of the head of the Kaiser's household during WW1. So far it does not present a flattering picture of the guy. Its...familiar.
