Recollections of My Nonexistence.
The former Marine David J. Morris, author of a book on post-traumatic stress disorder, notes that the disorder is far more common and far more rarely addressed among rape survivors than combat veterans. He wrote me, "The science on the subject is pretty clear: according to the New England Journal of Medicine, rape is about four times more likely to result in diagnosable PTSD than combat.
Think about that for a moment-being raped is four times more psychologically disturbing than going off to a war and being shot at and blown up. And because there are currently no enduring cultural narratives that allow women to look upon their survival as somehow heroic or honorable, the potential for enduring damage is even greater."

planet, to reverse the dangerous current of history. There is enough outrage to bring down the old, and we have more than enough ideas to build the new. But we might have to accept defeat first. Not morally, perhaps, but certainly, in almost all political battlefields. Admitting this reality will liberate us from our delusions and give us the humility to change our vocabulary. I should know. When nobody asks any more for our opinion about how things should be, our words should be clear, humble and profound.
We need words that will resonate in people's hearts. Our current chaos demands a poetic understanding, and nothing else will work. To beat the hate that is threatening to overcome us, we should be brave enough to talk about love in politics and this time without a smirk. We should borrow words from poetry and even religion, whatever works. It is the only way to see whether we are still the majority, to remind ourselves how numerous we are and that we will hold the line for basic morality.
We need to do this now, and now is an infinite word. This is a manifesto against a heartless world. This is the new vocabulary for the progressive politics of emotions.
Because now is the time for the new, the beautiful and the humane. For when nothing holds, you and I have to remind each other that we are, we were and we will be.

Goodbye, heartless world
Dear Reader,
The gloves are off; the cut-throat world order no longer pretends to be pretty. The icing on the cake - the rule of law, liberal democracy, human rights and all that - is now unnecessary. All that we imagine would protect us from dark forces is melting. Fascism, after making strong footholds in the political sphere, is now threatening basic human morality. Genocide is pending, and it will be against all those with basic human decency.
The world has become heartless. Therefore, there is no point in calling rulers to shame or listing political and moral atrocities. It is a system whereby those who speak of dignity, equality and caring for fellow humans are simply an inconvenient redundancy.
Rather than dragging out the tired old ways and being crushed repeatedly, it is better to admit it. We are defeated. Despite this, dear reader, here I am - waiting for you. And you are here too. The reason for us to meet on this page is that we still believe in humanity and that we suffice to begin anew.
Enough counting the morbid symptoms; the birth of the new world is overdue. Yet, for the last push, we need to conceive of a strong new heart to deliver the future of humanity. This new heart is urgently required to gather all the protestations of the…
