Claiming "almost no one in America" has trouble affording food is a wild take. In 2024, 13.7% of households were food insecure and 5.4% of households were very food insecure. And this is before Republicans kicked 4 million people off SNAP www.ers.usda.gov/topics/food-...

Lastly, I also graphed consumer sentiment with whether people think it's a good time or bad time to buy a car or vehicle. Look at that plummet from mid 2021, especially for homes.
Second, I graphed consumer sentiment with unemployment expectations. Since the end of 2023, people seem to be expecting unemployment to go up. Concern about AI is the first thing that comes to my mind.

Just for fun I did the same thing but restricting to only self-employed/contractors for primary job (the variable is not available for secondary jobs). The magnitude is small but the direction of travel is the same
