This obstinate fuckwit searched '1080 Kea Deaths' back at the start of this. I found an interesting article which detailed multiple papers summarising studies including 222 kea where 24 birds died (10.4%) over 6 operations, another where 6 out of 12 kea died (50%) and more with 5 - 41% mortality

Just got back and I think I saw one cross the path ahead - just a grey ghost and a rustle. Bumped into a lady with her daughter who saw three on three separate occasions! So lucky! But a lovely couple were out looking for bugs and I got to see my first ever wētā!
