The federal government just indicted a man for having good security settings.
Samuel Tunick flew home to Atlanta. CBP grabbed him at the airport, demanded his phone, and told him they did not need a warrant. He had GrapheneOS installed with a duress PIN, a feature that wipes the device instead of unlocking it. The screen flashed. The data went away. Now he is facing a federal charge for destruction of property to prevent seizure.
Read that again. They said they did not need a warrant to take it. Then they charged him with a crime for the state of the thing they did not need a warrant to take.
The agents floated child exploitation as the reason for the search. His lawyers say the actual interest was his association with the Cop City opposition. Funny how that works. The scariest possible accusation gets deployed at the checkpoint, and the political one shows up in the paperwork later.
Here is the principle. Your phone is not a suitcase. It is your papers, your effects, your entire life, and the Fourth Amendment does not evaporate because you are standing on a particular square of linoleum at Hartsfield-Jackson. A duress PIN is a lock. Refusing to open a lock is not obstruction. If the government wants what is behind it, there is a well established procedure. It involves a judge.
Encryption is not evidence of a crime. It is evidence that you were paying attention.

You don't build a stronger party by treating experience like a liability or pretending everyone who came before you is the enemy. You build it by respecting those who've laid the foundation while welcoming new leaders who are ready to add to it.

One afternoon, he obliged —a photograph taken inside the barracks, of himself and another soldier grinning for the camera. Behind them, pinned to the wall, was a map of the compound showing the unit's position.
The housewife did not exist. "She" was a middle-aged officer named Serhiy working for Ukraine's military-intelligence directorate, part of a concerted effort to draw secrets from the men sent to occupy his country.
"Serhiy was great at flirting," his commander told me. "Guys in our team started asking him for dating advice." Shortly after Achmad sent that photograph, the coordinates it revealed were struck by a Ukrainian drone. »

BREAKING: According to our analysis, ~$920
million worth of crude oil shorts were taken 70 minutes before an Axios report claimed the US and Iran were near a "14-point" deal to end the war.
At 3:40 AM ET today, nearly 10,000 contracts worth of crude oil shorts were taken without any major news.
This is equivalent to ~$920 milion in notional value, an unusually large trade for 3:40 AM ET.
At 4:50 AM ET, just 70 minutes later, Axios reported that the US is "close" to a "memorandum of understanding" to end the Iran War.
By 7:00 AM ET, oil prices had fallen over -12% with these crude oil shorts gaining approximately +$125 million.

Mr. R’s secret is that his work is not primarily artistic or informative—it is functional. He serves a purpose for the industry he covers. Mr. R’s job is to absorb the tech industry’s self-mythologizing, and then believe in it even harder than the industry itself does. He serves as a kind of plausibility ratchet. His byline and employer legitimize a level of credulousness that would otherwise be laughable, and thereby allow tech PR to seem relatively restrained. Mr. R has no problem going AI because he himself has been a small cog in a big ugly machine for a long time.

Officials are typically only issued a badge and a gun after undergoing law-enforcement training.
The administration was preparing to bring on Tom Feeley, a former top ICE official in New York, as its new director when Lewandowski asked Feeley if he would be willing to issue him and several other political officials badges and guns. Feeley declined, and he was subsequently passed over for the top job at ICE.

I just exercised my right as a Member of Congress to conduct an unannounced oversight visit of the
ICE field facility in Baltimore. The staff I met with respected my right to visit, but what I saw was disgraceful. Kristi Noem has a budget of $75 billion she could use to ensure humane conditions, but we saw 60 men packed into a room shoulder-to-shoulder, 24-hours-a-day, with a single toilet in the room and no shower facilities. They sleep like sardines with aluminum foil blankets. Whether it's for three days or seven days, nobody would want a member of their family warehoused there. The room set aside for dangerous criminals and violent offenders was empty. We're demanding immediate answers and action.

I gave all my Apple wealth away because wealth and power are not what I live for. I have a lot of fun and happiness. I funded a lot of important museums and arts groups in San Jose, the city of my birth, and they named a street after me for being good. I now speak publicly and have risen to the top. I have no idea how much I have but after speaking for 20 years it might be $10M plus a couple of homes. I never look for any type of tax dodge. I earn money from my labor and pay something like 55% combined tax on it. I am the happiest person ever. Life to me was never about accomplishment, but about Happiness, which is Smiles minus Frowns. I developed these philosophies when I was 18-20 years old and I never sold out.

Do not punish the behaviour you want to see
I mean, it seems pretty obvious when you put it like that, right?
But how many families, when an introvert sibling or child makes an effort to socialize, snarkily say, "So, you've decided to join us"?
Or when someone does something they've had trouble doing, say, "Why can't you do that all the time?" (Happened to me, too often.)
Or any sentence containing the word "finally".
If someone makes a step, a small step, in a direction you want to encourage, encourage it. Don't complain about how it's not enough. Don't bring up previous stuff. Encourage it.
Because I swear to f. cking god there is nothing more soul-killing, more motivation-crushing, than struggling to succeed and finding out that success and failure are both punished.

I'm sure many of you have heard by now that earlier this week, IU k*lled the print edition of its student paper, the IDS. The issue that was supposed to print this week contained criticism of the Whitten regime and IUs further slide into Fscist control, and they couldn't allow that to happen during Homecoming, when all the rich alumni are in town.
Enter Purdue! The Purdue student paper, The Exponent, owns its own presses. Yesterday, in an act of tremendous solidarity with their biggest rival school, they printed the forbidden issue of the IDS. They then drove it to Bloomington overnight and stocked all of the IDS boxes on campus, just in time for Homecoming.
Solidarity is what makes us stronger, and solidarity will be what ultimately allows us to triumph, if we can ever truly get it together. I hope everyone has a fun, safe day if they're going out today, and I hope we can think about what acts of solidarity we can begin taking to really make this movement MOVE - beyond a permitted expression of upset into more active resistance.
