“Tol Eressëa” (watercolour, 2026) One of six new artworks I’m currently working on for a book about the history of the Elves to be published by Legendaria Ediciones.

Sneak peeks at what I’m working on for @painlandweek on Tumblr. Feels good to be drawing Payneland again after spending the past weeks mostly working on Tolkien commissions for an upcoming book (which are fun, too, of course).

Longer bike ride yesterday (79km, 1050m of altitude gain): rode up to and along the range of hills between Hesse & Northrhine-Westphalia along Rothaarsteig, a long-distance hiking trail. Last time I was here, the hills were covered with firs. Drought caused by climate change and beetles killed them.

In a bout of insanity, I signed up for the #2DayFilmChallenge. Here’s a peek at what I’m working on. Had to sneak in a #DeadBoyDetectives reference, of course, with Angie the Anglerfish. Lots of animating, fine-tuning, editing and sound editing still to do. The 3-5 min film must finished tomorrow.

Found this chap on the road during a brief bicycle ride today. When I was trying to persuade it to climb a bit of bark so that I could pick it up to prevent it from getting run over, it attacked first the bark and then my hand. But I managed to carry it off the road and to safety in the end.

Bicycle ride through the Schelderwald, an area that until the 1960s had lots of iron mines. Sadly, many of the remaining buildings are falling apart now. Pretty sure the deserted villa is haunted … And bang, the plot bunnies bite again. Iron mines, ghosts … oh, give me a break 👻👻 #DeadBoyDetectives

Working on a watercolour of Ancalagon the Black for the 2027 Beyond Bree Tolkien calendar. The blue stuff is rubber masking fluid. I also experimented with salt to give the wet-in-wet parts some more texture. Now come the scales and a small brush ...

Peek at new #DeadBoyDetectives art. Normally when doing ink art in my sketchbook, every drawing gets its own sheet of paper. But in this case, I thought the boys should be on facing pages so that they can cuddle when the book is closed. The finished Charles art will be posted on Jayden’s birthday.
