2026 #Hugo novella nominee THE SUMMER WAR is by @naominovik.bsky.social. The daughter and two sons of a Grand Duke are each in turn trapped by his political ambitions, which lead to retribution from the "summer folk". Lovely mythic quality to the writing, with plenty of plot twists. #Books #Booksky
2026 #Hugo novella nominee MURDER BY MEMORY is by @oliviawaite.com. On a spaceship travelling for centuries, a woman detective solves a rare murder. Cozy British vibes in a sci-fi setting, including aunts, tea, and knitting. First book featuring Dorothy Gentleman, with more to come! #Books #Booksky
2026 #Hugo novella nominee THE RIVER HAS ROOTS is by @amalelmohtar.com. Magic manifests in songs, willows, a river, and the fae in this story about two sisters finding their destinies not via heroics but by living and loving. I read this, but I'm told the audiobook plays the music! #Books #Booksky
2026 #Hugo novella nominee CINDER HOUSE by @freyamarske.bsky.social is a spin on the Cinderella fairy tale. Ella becomes a ghost in the first pages, but nonetheless meets the prince, who is holding a three-day ball looking for a wife. Ghost story that turns into #romantasy. #Books #Booksky
2026 #Hugo novella nominee AUTOMATIC NOODLE by @annaleen.bsky.social is about a team of robots struggling with self-autonomy, cooking perfect ramen, social media, and anti-robot sentiment in a far-future San Francisco noodle shop. Deceptively innocent as it touches on real issues. #Books #Booksky
2026 #Hugo book nominee A DROP OF CORRUPTION by @robertjbennett.bsky.social is the 2nd in a series. In a world where most tech involves bioengineering, an Imperial detective and her assistant unravel a series of murders in a backwater country. Sherlock Holmes "biopunk" vibes! #Books #Booksky
2026 #Hugo book nominee THE EVERLASTING by @alixeharrow.bsky.social starts as an Arthurianesque #romantasy, but unleashes itself a third of the way in. Yes, thoughts on love, but also time, politics, and the power of stories. Has been picked up by #Netflix for a TV series! #Books #Booksky
2026 #Hugo book nominee SHROUD by @aptshadow.bsky.social follows two humans who crash on a high-gravity moon and struggle to reunite with their expedition. Amazingly well-written: the hard science is fascinating, with alien life fitting logically into a harsh, dark environment. #Books #Booksky
2026 #Hugo book nominee DEATH OF THE AUTHOR by @nnedi.bsky.social is two interlaced stories. One, about a paraplegic Nigerian-American author living in our near future, is alone worth the read. The other is in the far future when humans are followed by artificial life. #Books #Booksky
2026 #Hugo book nominee THE INCANDESCENT by @emilytesh.net starts as a pleasant British school slice-of-life (at a magic school), touching on teaching, romance, and teen life, before spinning into demonic terrors. A great fantasy roller coaster. #Books #Booksky
I miss the days when the loudest complaint we had about the president was his suit color. And NGL I thought he looked good in tan. I own a tan suit too. But if you disagree, I support your personal rejection of tan suits as long as you don't ban them for the rest of us. #ObamaAppreciationDay

Reading Hugo-nominated THE INCANDESCENT by Emily Tesh. A demon is speaking to the head teacher at a British school of magic, trying to understand how and why she teaches: "You manipulate his perceptions, to make him stronger. And this satisfies your nature." Can't wait to see how this ends!
