Not good at sharing that's for sure. There's a semi resident bird here who has found all the worms, grubs and beetles in the mulch. It's part of a big mob but when the whole fam visits, it stays up high - only comes down to feed when it's on its own.

For Rob @robcrank68.bsky.social 's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #BathTime, here's a terrible photo of masked lapwings bathing in a storm water run off pond on a beach. I've never seen them bathing before but they were having a grand time.

Beautiful. Bet it had an easier time getting there than the kid who decided to test fate and place a traffic bollard in a similar position on a local tree sometime in the last day.

A stately Norfolk Island pine has been topped by a bright orange traffic bollard.
There's a second pine just to the left - the bird perched at its top is possibly a little bemused.

I was hoping for mostly home grown roast veges this evening and, quite a bit will be. My parsnips though, are a little underwhelming. #HomeGrownHarvest #Veges

Today's #BirdOfTheDay Theme is #Preeners&Scratchers, birds preening plumage or scratching, the Alt Theme is #Black&White, birds with Black & White in their plumage. This little Willie wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys) kept me company this morning.

A small, glossy black bird, with a white belly and chest and white eyebrow sits atop a polished granite headstone. Other headstones are visible and there is dense coastal scrub in the background.

Found some fungi I've never seen in my bush before this afternoon. Such a lovely deep colour. I'd have loved to have seen them in their prime.

A claret coloured mushroom with white gills on the forest floor.
It's well past its best - the red top is partially munched(?) and the gills are exposed around the edges so it looks frilled.

The pine cones in two large Norfolk Island Pines are currently being decimated by at least 9 Sulfur-crested cockatoos - large white parrots with a prominent comb of bright yellow feathers on the tops of their heads.

Large and small mating grasshoppers on a rusty old star picket. On first glance they appear mid brown but on a closer look, they have huge eyes, beautifully spotted tails, a cream stripe running horizontally along their sides and a black band around their middles. Their antenna are short, solid and ridged. The larger one is carrying a couple of tiny, vermilion mites.

Species info in the alt tab for each pic. Before I started, I dug up all the Buffalo - it took a couple of rounds to remove all the bits of root I'd missed. I'm on heavy clay so gypsum to improve the soil, then cardboard layers and heavy eucy mulch to smother weeds. Lots of work to get started.

Viola hederacea. Grown from a single tube stock plant and now covering multiple square metres.
It is surprisingly durable - I walk on this all the time.

Lobelia purpurascens.
Volunteer plant growing through the native violets.
I also have Lobelia anceps in a garden bed where it gets thick enough to function as a living mulch.

Dichondra repens. A beautiful green carpet where it's shady.

Polymeria calycina. Another volunteer plant.
This dies back in the cooler months but never really disappears. In warm sunny weather it's covered in small, bright pink, trumpet flowers.
Really hardy - it's growing where I walk and where I'm still working so I've pulled a full trolley over it loads of times.

Pretty. Much prettier than the little Phallus rubicundus that popped up in my garden this morning.

Here's a domestic cat (I know the owner) hunting a bandicoot in my garden. I can't even count the birds and lizards this one cat has killed.

#BirdOfTheDay #BestOfTheMonth I've been wondering why the local pair of Masked lapwings have been so vocal the last couple of days. Today this little chick popped out of a parent's breast feathers as I was walking past.

An adult Masked lapwing (Vanellus miles) is standing on the left foreground of the photo. A tiny fluff ball chick is standing in the very middle of the pic.
These birds are ferociously protective of eggs and chicks so the parent is yelling at me and their lifelong mate is out of frame but closing rapidly from behind. They have small spurs on their wings and are well known for swooping anyone who gets too close.
It's mid Autumn but still warm on the east coast of Australia so not unusual for this species to breed.

The bird is a medium sized black and greyish white Australian songbird. They have a large beak; the top beak has a pronounced hook at the tip.

An Australian tiger crane fly.
It is orange with horizontal black stripes on its body and vertical black stripes behind its head. It has VERY long legs!

Here's the little one that's discovered my garden and now makes regular visits (just the first 5 or 6 seconds of the video). Worryingly, I also have a regular domestic cat visitor but in NSW, there's not a damn thing I can do.

A pair of Sooty Oystercatchers. These birds are vulnerable in NSW so it's always lovely to see them. #ShoreBirds #OzBirds

A pair of Sooty Oystercatchers on a pebbly cliff above the ocean.
The birds are large waders. They have black feathers, long red beaks and matching red eye rings and pink legs.
They're really quite striking.

Goodenia ovata - A bright yellow flower with 5 petals (3 hanging down, 2 standing upright).
The leaves are bright green, oval and serrated.

Purchased from a market in Nth QLD Australia around 1989 so I have no idea of provenance, ID or age. It's just beautiful; and the external 'shell' ridges fit my hand perfectly.

One side of a fossil. It's largish snail shaped but this side exposes parts of the soft tissue.
The fossil is taupe coloured and there is a band of yellow quartz running through the tissue.

An Australian Brushturkey has been visiting my garden for the last week or so. She's got quite a bit of personality and plenty of #Black&Red for #BirdOfTheDay

An Australian Brushturkey - a largish, mostly black bird with some pale edged feathers on the chest. They have a bright yellow collar and a red head - both very sparsely feathered so they look naked. Their tails are held vertically so as not to catch dirt when they're digging up the leaf litter.
This lass is visiting my suburban native garden and digging up the mulch.

Two glossy black Australian ravens (Corvus coronoides I think) perched on an orange lichen covered rock. They are looking away from one another.

It would be fun but I don't think they do. Here's a moth from the same genus I photographed on my verandah last October (spring in Oz). About 60mm Head to wing tip.
