9 months ago a best friend I have had since I was 3 years old died suddenly and I still cry almost daily lately over this loss. Going to see Dave Matthews Band this weekend and that was a thing we always did together in our 20s so I’m going to be extra emo this week. I wrote a poem or two about it

Poem text: That moment you realize all the hopes and dreams that evolve into
nows
go from tangible pieces of self to a video reel only you can
see on the screen behind your eyes or a trinket
that goes in a box under the bed
you move place to place and smile thinking about who you were when those things mattered and suddenly
that box feels so heavy carrying the weight of it all

So, yes, l am the person in 2026 writing poetry but I've been doing it since I was 11 and sometimes I have to get one out like it's under my skin and must ooze into word form. I was missing someone today so I wrote a poem real quick:
The sticky white Polaroid
Of a moment charged with possibility
A microcosm
of a galaxy in my brain as you weave yourself
into the fabric of my memories
Smiling at the table
Laughing at our dumb selves on repeat
The nights in general admission dancing by the light of the moon
Spinning under fireworks and confetti
These are the skeletons next I will build the muscle carrying your ballad through the streets
...Reimagined regret cherished like an orchid in the window

The end of the poem

I press my nose against the pane
The tears form rivers
through the lines of my palm
Foretelling the verses
of ancient dreams turned recollection
You taught me
The act of contrition is the ability to delete the uncomfortable scenes
Therefore I am not a reliable narrator of one whose star glistened on nights like bringing together old feuds turned to best friends
As long as my mind holds I will carry the fairy lights through your woods
That, dear, is life after death All the ghosts show me your face A video loop of your greatest hits sprinkled between your loved ones your name on the tip of my tongue

Then and now. 5 years of the best dog ever, Jackson Avery. Rescued from a DE shelter who saved him from death row in TX. He was highly abused and scarred but is such a weirdo sweetheart. I can’t imagine life without him
