People sit or lay on the ground near Black Sands to feel the thumps of steam release under this pool! The earth shakes, there is a thump like a drum and the steam bubbles up into the pool and billows over you. In this video you can hear us trying to figure out what’s happening…
Deep reflective blues, bubbling over and billowing steam. The wild bison stretch across the valley. At such altitude the light seemed brighter. What a magnificent place. Some of the colors and textures from our recent trip to #Yellowstone
There were two bison in front of our hotel at Yellowstone. One of the staff said a guest tried to pet one!! Despite ample printed warnings to stay 25 yards away. He showed us a video of a bison starring down that man backed against a cabin behind an ADK chair. He was let into the cabin unharmed.
If you are curious about the knowledge that old masters used to enhance their craft, I highly recommend reading this book. It’s a wonderful collision of science & art prompted by an artist’s deep curiosity, a curiosity that never dimmed. Thank you, David Hockney, for showing us how to look.
The inscription in the front makes this book a treasure. The book was a loving birthday gift from my grandfather, Francis Crick, to my grandmother, Odile Crick, who was a figurative artist. They would have seen many of the old masters Hockney examines, together at the National Gallery in London. 3/4
In his book Secret Knowledge, Hockney recounts the story of how he uncovered scientific & visual evidence, examining major works of art history & unveiled how artists such as Caravaggio,Velázquez, van Eyck, Holbein, Leonardo & Ingres used mirrors & lenses to help create their famous masterpieces 2/4
David Hockney’s curiosity had a profound impact on me. In 2007, I was able to select books from my grandparents’ collection. I picked this one up, and it changed the way I understood both traditional western art and how we use tools to create images. 1/4

While I was crouched down looking by a log I heard a crashing through the cottonwoods. A deer bound up into the far meadow. They seemed curious about me starring at the ground moving leaves around like I’d lost something important.
As always, I was about to give up and then I found some. Later, cooked them up in butter for dinner. 🤌

Apparently I’m a sucker for opals. There were a number of them in water which prevents them from cracking or crazing. Stable opals cost much more. So now I’m trying to ‘slow dry’ my opal. When it’s wet it’s transparent with plays of color. Eventually I expect this one to become milky… #rocks
I should have taken a photo of what he brought back. The sunstones were cut and polished. Some with glowing reds emanating from the center. I collect raw stones, but could admire what he showed me. I did pick up a unique blue ‘Holley agate’ which is from Holley, Oregon.
In the quiet beach town in Yachats, OR there’s a wonderful rock shop with corners full of curiosities. Half the stuff I’m not sure is even out on display. I asked if they had sunstones ( a unique feldspar with copper inclusions found in Oregon). The guy goes into the back and brings back a box…
This one has flown to a new home. The gallery full flood lighting isn’t t the best way to highlight the interference pigment used - the color shift seen from different vantage points. Was thinking about testing out a different way to light it when someone stepped in and bought it. #sciart
This is also sometimes called a ‘false morel’ even though I don’t think it looks anything like a morel mushroom. But, you do find them in the same area where morel mushrooms will eventually show up.
Don’t be fooled. These are what pop up a week before Morel mushrooms do. 🍄🟫 🌿 #mushroomforager

A new phishing scam, at least for me. Twice this week I’ve received invitations that look like this from friends in completely different social circles. Looks like a paperless post invitation but the landing page asks you to log in with your email credentials. Have you gotten one of these? #scam
Deep sleep is a mysterious part of the night. It arrives early, when the heart rate slows, the body cools & the mind slips beneath awareness. This stage helps stabilize important memories. Neurons firing together in slow, synchronized rhythms, creating low frequency delta waves across the cortex. 🐡
Things you happen upon in a small coastal town. I give you, a bowl of preserved moss. As a great admirer of moss in its natural habitat I did not realize that you could preserve it. #moss 🌱
