This one, amongst others...

A picture of David Seymour, dressed in a yellow head band, fluro yellow singlet, yellow wristbands and small pink shorts, and thankfully a pair of longer black shorts underneath, twerking. These are words that should never have to be written. It's a photo of breathtaking horror in many regards, and should have represented the end of his political career. Sadly it did not.

We live in the era of the symbolic executive, when "being good at stuff" matters far less than the appearance of doing stuff, where "what's useful" is dictated not by outputs or metrics that one can measure but rather the vibes passed between managers and executives that have worked their entire careers to escape the world of work. Our economy is run by people that don't participate in it and our tech companies are directed by people that don't experience the problems they allege to solve for their customers, as the modern executive is no longer a person with demands or responsibilities beyond their allegiance to shareholder value.

I asked how the original story was approved for publication as it appeared to be unbalanced, not meet ethical standards and how it was considered newsworthy. I also said I'd seen people putting their groceries into tote bags and they weren't in the newspapers.

Response from Watkins to my complaint, saying: Hi Tom. Golriz Gahraman is a former MP who was forced to resign after admitting shoplifting offences. This is a rare and extraordinary event. MPs are expected to have the voters trust so any criminal conviction is newsworthy.
As to the story you complain about, it is a fact that police are investigating Golriz for shoplifting following an incident at a supermarket.
Our article is merely stating the actions that led up to that police investigation without judgement. It is then up to readers to decide the rights and wrongs of the supermarket reporting her to police, and the subsequent police action.
It is my fervent wish that readers like yourself would stop confusing the media's reporting of facts with opinion - the two are not the same but people increasingly find it difficult to distuinghish between the two. Any fact that they disagree with is rejected as opinion and false news.
It is a worrying trend that makes me deeply concerned about the future of sound public discourse. This is how Donald Trump was able to become so devastatingly effective as a politician. He has convinced his supporters that nothing unfavourable that the media reports about him is true, even when it is fact.
I hope you are able to examine your complaint in that light and reflect on whether you are doing journalism a disservice.
