Sure, you can teach a rope, but can you teach a gigantic news organization like the @nytimes.com that they still need copy editors? (It’s corrected in the online version.)
A few weeks ago, I bought a copy of Walt Whitman's Selected Journalism edited by Noverr and Stacy. It's a 2014 book, but I thought it was not previously owned—it clearly hasn't been read. But today, while waiting for a student who was late to advising, I opened it and found this.
I love many things about this @brianphillips.bsky.social piece, including all of the many very funny parts, but also this hat tip to good editing and the kicker, which puts deserved faith in student journalists. www.theringer.com/2025/11/25/n...
When I first read this, I 💯% thought that Johnny Storm was in East Asia, stumping for Lee Jae Myung.
The state of things has devolved to the point where the Paper of Record is structuring its stories around How it started/How it’s going memes.
I have a text thread of journalism nerd friends who fetishize reporter’s notebooks. One of those friends is also here and shared this new addition to her collection. No photo credit b/c I’m totally sharing w/o permission. 😇 I’m too lazy to dig mine out of my backpack.
In the end I decided to come down to my 25th reunion at @columbiajournalism.bsky.social Happy to have already connected with a half dozen classmates over breakfast. Less happy that we have to have a panel about free speech and institutional integrity. But such is the world right now.
The Kentucky Derby may be decadent and depraved, but at least Journalism is a clear favorite.
Hearing Chris Hayes on the day of the #handsoff protests. He was met with a cardboard sign from an audience member who had been out protesting.
I'm floored to find out that I'm one of the eight Columbia Scholastic Press Association Centennial Alumni Achievement Award winners. Very cool to be part of this group. I love working with CSPA. This is the first award I've won from them since I was 17! precollege.sps.columbia.edu/news/cspa-ce...
Kudos to the @nytimes.com editors who kept themselves amused by juxtaposing news about what’s going on in Wales with news about what’s going on in whales.
Always get the quote from the expert, even if the expert's quote is "🤷🏻♂️"
This is 100% intentional, right? I mean, I guess if you're a Times headline writer who has to come up with the typical wishy-washy normalizing heds, you have to do *something* to amuse yourself, no?
This parenthetical makes type-nerd Kevin very happy. www.nytimes.com/2024/02/28/t...
Thrilled to welcome @jbouie.bsky.social to Marist College tonight. Amazing job by student Emma Denes introducing him too.
A journalism historian never forgets the first time he saw a Merganthaler Linotype in person.
