National Hurricane Center says Lala may strengthen and lead to a hurricane warning later today for Big Island. Very heavy rain expected which could lead to landslides on steep terrain. Large and dangerous waves, especially on south shores.

These little friends have been pecking my window all morning.

Two little saffron finches. They’re all yellow with orange beaks. Always in pairs.

Turns out I got a nice pic of my favorite reef fish the other day. I thought it was a royal tang, but it's not. No idea what it actually is, but I love the royal blue body and gold stripe around it's eye and body. And the white tail is flashy!

Dark, royal blue body, white tail with a vertical gold stripe. Gold stripes on the outer edges of it's body, as well as around it's eyes.So pretty in the sun, but this pic was on a murky day so it's not as vivid here as it is on a sunny day.

Century plant is blooming.

A 25’ green spike with short green branches coming off the main spike. The most mature blossom at the bottom of the pic is about the size of a hand. The bottom of “the hand” is green with spikes of purplish flowers sticking up like fingers in a clump. There are 4 other “hands” above it with yellow or yellow-greenish flowers and much smaller blooms towards the top.

Barracuda!

Longish, narrow, silvery, sneaky-looking fish with black fins, just hanging out in the water, giving me the side eye. Maybe a foot long, so not too scary.

Does anyone recognize this cute little wrasse? Loved the color.

A small, about 4", teal-colored wrasse with whitish stripes on it's back. Hanging out on top of dead reef rocks.

A mixed group of reef fish, mostly brown ones of various types. Healthy pinkish cauliflower coral in the bottom right on the rocks. Those corals have recovered nicely, finally, from the 2018 mega-bleaching event.

The fish are all flat ones, some with black and white stripes behind/around their eyes, some with yellow spots and yellow stripes behind their eyes, and a single yellow tang at the top left of the pic. The cauliflower coral looks somewhat like a brain. They're not very attractive but there are now A LOT of them again - slow-growing.

Some tangs from today. And a yellow trumpet fish hanging out with them, about 10 o'clock in the image. (So much to learn)

A small school of relatively small/young yellow tangs. The trumpet fish is not as bright yellow and is long and tubular, about 8" long maybe, instead of roundish and flat as the tangs are. I don't know who he thinks he's fooling hanging out with them.

This little fellow drops by every day about this time and knocks on the window. Yellow-billed cardinal, supposedly rare-ish, but we seem to have a lot of them in N Kohala.

One of the best Christmases ever. Grands are getting almost old enough to enjoy it. Santa already came tonight. Stockings to open tomorrow.

Empty glass that held milk. A few remnants from the sugar cookies the littles decorated, including the excellent Christmas tree I decorated and my daughter messed up. White cookie with green smears and candy white sugar ornaments all misplaced. Sigh. What can you do?
