Sargent: I think you actually get an important point there with this idea about him not understanding that if you use bombs, you have fewer bombs. Because he really does believe that he’s in a position of limitless strength. He thinks America has unlimited power, but by that he actually means he has unlimited power, because he couldn’t possibly be weak in any way.

And so you can really see how he goes from there to not really paying close attention to little details like what the war that he started is doing to our weapons stockpiles, right?

Marcotte: Yeah, he has a very childish vision of what American military might is, which is, we definitely have a large military, one of the biggest and most expensive in the world, but it’s not limitless. Sargent: Well, there’s another funny detail in the Post story. It says this, quote: “Hegseth defended himself and blamed his deputy for the shortages and for not ensuring Trump was fully apprised of the issue.”

Amanda, Hegseth has to blame someone below him for the fact that Trump was not on top of the situation enough to know what the hell was happening. At no point can anyone say, why doesn’t the president of the United States know what his own war is doing to our ammunition stockpiles? What do you think of that?

Marcotte: This is something that I find super fascinating, and the examples are endless. It’s the paradox of MAGA, right? Which is, on one hand, they all worship Donald Trump as this almighty leader who knows everything and can do everything and is the greatest leader of all time and blah, blah, blah.

Also, he can’t ever be expected to know anything, be responsible for anything, et cetera. Like, he’s blameless always. He is like a baby.

And so I think we’re seeing this play out at the top ranks of the Trump administration, which is a lot of people who are incompetent, and their only pathway to success is through slavish devotion to this moron. And there was no other way for them to get there. So they’re willing to make those compromises.

Sargent: It’s almost like there’s a contract or a deal of sorts, right? Donald Trump knows that he can get certain types of people to relentlessly do his bidding once he kind of co-opts them into his cult. So he picks them because he recognizes in them a certain weakness of character and willingness to do whatever it takes to kind of be in the chosen charmed circle.

He’s really kind of very canny at that. Let’s give him some credit here, right? This is something Donald Trump is good at. He is perceptive about people almost in an animal-like way, isn’t he?

Marcotte: Yeah, probably because he recognizes himself in this, right? He is the person who is incompetent and has only ever succeeded in life because he was willing to break rules, lie, cheat, use deception, because he knows that he can’t actually succeed on his merits. And so I think he recognizes that in other people.

Darlene Thomas from Aboriginal family violence service Djirra said many acts of violence against First Nations women were "ignored" by law enforcement.

"Our women tell you that police often refuse to take their statements or properly investigate family violence or breaches of intervention orders," she said.

"Aboriginal women are often not believed because they don't present as the perfect victim, and police regularly believe male perpetrators over Aboriginal women.

"These men are most often non-Aboriginal. We don't call this misidentification. We call this racial targeting."

Without evidence, he said some Australians are drawing a connection between today's outage and a ballistic missile test launched by China into the Pacific earlier this week.

"There's many questions Australians are asking," he said.

"We saw a provocative and unwelcome missile launch from the PLA (China's People's Liberation Army) yesterday, and I can understand why Australians are drawing that connection.

But Taylor deflected questions as to whether this was "irresponsible", reiterating that the government had "not explained" what was going on.

One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce says Pauline Hanson fights against things that Australians "never wanted".

Senator Hanson touched on several topics at the centre of what could be considered "culture wars" in Australia, including migration, welcomes to country, and transgender rights.

Speaking to Sky News after the address, Mr Joyce said "the executive" (aka bureaucrats in Canberra) had too much power in "pushing social agendas".

"It's brought forward decisions that the Australian people have never voted for and in many instances never wished," he said.

"We never had a vote for three flags, we never had a vote for welcome to country, there was never a wider debate about it, it was just incrementally put in place ... and Australian people don't want that."

Among Sewell’s rich associates are a race-car driver turned failed political candidate who owns a fleet of planes; the son of a gun dealer and inventor in regional Victoria; a jet-setting “manfluencer” friend of Andrew Tate who sells penis supplements to teenagers; a property development heir turned provocateur, and a stockbroker mixing with MAGA influencers overseas.

International extremism expert Matt Kriner, who recently assessed the NSN for the Albanese government, says the assets and connections uncovered by this masthead suggest Australia’s neo-Nazis have entered a dangerous new phase. “Historically, when fascist movements start to sequester themselves in compounds, particularly those that have already shown a fascination with violence, terrorists and weapons like the NSN, that makes them very dangerous,” Kriner said.

That includes terror cell The Order as well as the Ku Klux Klan at its height – two groups openly lionised by the NSN.
“Of course, one man’s secret military compound is another’s house in the ’burbs,” Coyne said. But the possibility of guns on the Melbourne property was particularly worthy of investigation, he added.

The blanket memes would have us believe that the tax rate for small businesses is going to rise from 30 per cent to 47 per cent.

It isn’t.

They also suggest the CGT changes mean they will lose 50 per cent of their capital gains to taxation when they eventually sell their businesses.

But that also is untrue.

Significant concessions will still apply to all small businesses, defined as those with aggregated annual turnovers below $2 million or with net assets below $6m.

Any small business that has been owned for 15 years or more will retain the most generous of concessions — a 100 per cent CGT exemption.

For those sold within 15 years, the capital gain is automatically reduced by 50 per cent or indexation — whichever is greater — through what’s called the Small Business Active Asset Reduction measure.

The remaining capital gain can be reduced by a further 50 per cent if it qualifies for what’s known as the “active asset reduction”, which applies to assets that were actively used in the conduct of the business.

In addition, the first $500,000 of capital gain is tax free if the individual is aged over 55 and for someone aged below 55 if they direct it into a superannuation fund.

And on top of all that, the entire capital gain can be deferred for up to two years before being taxed at all. That allows it to be reinvested in a new business venture in the meantime if so desired.

These are what we call facts.

They don’t fit in the limited space of an internet meme.

But they are important.

I am not ‘sick’, I am done.

The only person who has gone through something similar is Yassmin Abdel-Magied, and hers is the only message I have read that met me where I am with real understanding.

It was not the dismissiveness of “overreacting.” Not the minimisation “of just take it easy or calm down.”

And especially, it was not the more troubling view that pathologises my reaction — that I must be mentally struggling.

That third one is the worst. Because pathologising is precisely what @victoriauniversity and @worksafevic used to justify and continue their abusive conduct towards me. I ask you to not repeat it.

Instead of focusing on people like me, look at what the record of racism has done. It forced Adam Goodes out of public life. It silenced the powerful voice of Stan Grant. It exiled Yassmin Abdel-Magied from a country she served. And now, here I am.

This record isn’t about mental health. It isn’t about any of us not being strong enough, calm enough, or intelligent enough. This is the record of racism.

The solemn mood at Melbourne's Dawn Service has been interrupted by loud heckling and boos from the crowd during Uncle Mark Brown's Welcome to Country address.

It continued for several moments as the Bunorong Elder became emotional during his address.

The shouting was quickly drowned out by a much louder applause from attendees.

In Sydney, a group of protesters booed and heckled during the acknowledgement of country at the Sunday Dawn Service.

Uncle Ray Minniecon is an Indigenous pastor and one of the founders of the annual Anzac Day event, the Coloured Diggers March, who delivered the acknowledgement.

Early into his delivery, a group began booing off to the side of the Cenotaph in Martin Place.

The Kabi-Kabi, Gurang-Gurang and South Sea Islander man continued with his acknowledgment, which was met with a large round of applause after.

Pastor Minniecon served for two years with the 51st Battalion within the Royal Queensland Regiment in the Citizens Military Forces as a transport driver.

Technically well written but somehow it feels like an exercise in techniques. Using the second person pronoun all the time became both distancing and intrusive. Ultimately, this story was rather unsatisfying for the reader as your style makes it difficult to get involved.

I have been accused of plagiarising 'Like a Hurricane' by Maxie Kay. The accusation made is that both stories are set in a nightclub, both involve Deeks and Kensi dancing and then going off for sex standing up, and afterwards tell each other that this meant nothing.

Yes, both are set in a night club, as are numerous other fics. It is canon that Kensi goes clubbing. My very first fic, 'Partners' written for Yuletide Madness, involved Kensi and Deeks in an undercover operation dancing in a night club. A scene in the more recent fic, 'The Second Hand Unwinds' (posted before 'Like a Hurricane'), was set after Jack walked out and had Kensi picking up a guy in a night club for sex as a way to deal with her feelings. I used the theme of that scene as the basis for Kensi's coping mechanism in 'Nothing More'.

There is NO mention in 'Nothing More' of Deeks and Kensi dancing and going off for sex. The sex that Kensi has against the wall is with an original character. Deeks doesn't even appear in the story until the final scene.

I'm not entirely sure myself the circumstances of the afternoon's undercover op, but it definitely didn't involve a night club. They found themselves in a situation where to maintain their cover they had to make out. During this Deeks got aroused (which he was embarrassed by), as did Kensi (which she is trying to ignore). It went no further. While Kensi does insist it meant nothing, Deeks himself doesn't say that and flinches at one point when she says it. Characters saying something meant nothing is nothing new, they've been doing it in stories and tv shows and movies for years. It is a pretty normal human response.

The sex against the wall scene (and the general concept of having sex with a stranger when struggling with their feelings for somebody else) was based on my West Wing story "Shades Of" from 2003, which is archived here at ffnet. There's probably more sex against walls in fanfic than real life.

I only ever read the first 2 chapters of 'Like a hurricane' and resent the implication that I copied it. I have plenty of ideas of my own, I don't need to borrow from others.

I also make note that the reader making the accusation in the review has not posted any reviews on 'Like a Hurricane'.

The economy has strengthened, the city of Budapest has been transformed, and Hungary’s family policies and determination to keep its culture have been studied around the world. He and I differed on Ukraine but I thought he was dead right to defy the EU, on illegal immigration especially. Why should a sovereign nation be bullied by Brussels into policies that would jeopardise its future as a distinct people? Under Orbán, Budapest became something of a haven for conservative intellectuals. This has been a significant point of soft power for Hungary and I don’t expect the new government will want that to change.

A researcher invented a fake eye condition called bixonimania, uploaded two obviously fraudulent papers about it to an academic server, and watched major AI systems present it as real medicine within weeks.
The fake papers thanked Starfleet Academy, cited funding from the Professor Sideshow Bob Foundation and the University of Fellowship of the Ring, and stated mid-paper that the entire thing was made up. Google's Gemini told users it was caused by blue light. Perplexity cited its prevalence at one in 90,000 people.

ChatGPT advised users whether their symptoms matched. The fake research was then cited in a peer-reviewed journal that only retracted it after Nature contacted the publisher.

My Take
The researcher made the papers as obviously fake as possible on purpose. The AI systems didn't catch it. Neither did the human researchers who cited it in real journals, which means people are feeding AI-generated references into their work without reading what they're actually citing.

I've covered the FDA using AI for drug review, the NYC hospital CEO ready to replace radiologists, and ChatGPT Health launching this year. All of that is happening in the same environment where a condition funded by a Simpsons character and endorsed by the crew of the Enterprise was being presented as emerging medical consensus. The people making these deployment decisions seem to believe the pipeline from research to AI to patient is more supervised than it actually is. This experiment suggests it isn't supervised much at all.
