I saw this version of Venus, Roman goddess and mother of Aeneas, at the Chicago Art Institute last weekend. She was created in 1851.

Lots of authors turned up their noses at Little Golden Books because they were cheaply produced. MWB did not, so families that couldn’t afford expensive hardcover books were still able to own some of the best written picture books. My own favorite was The Golden Egg Book.
