10.9.2022 ‘Oath Swearing and Paying Tribute’ Coloured pencil on paper 41x58cm During the afternoon and evening of Saturday 10th September I observed members of the House of Lords paying tribute to her Majesty the Queen and swearing their new oaths of allegiance to the King.

On Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday, I’m excited to announce my contribution to a new collection of works commissioned for Parliamentary Art Collection commemorating the Lying-In-State. My painting The Vigil will be unveiled at an exhibition in Westminster in July

In the second chapter of The Secrets of Painting, I experiment with the technique of painting with beeswax; Encaustic In Roman Egypt, artists created paint by mixing ground pigment with beeswax. The wax had to be kept molten hotand then applied to the picture surface at speed!
As part of my research for the Secrets of Painting I undertook a pilgrimage to the Chauvet cave. To reach the cave I had to hike 45 minutes through dense woodland a final scramble upwards along high escarpments brought me to a steel portal in the rock which I drew using my iPad

As part of my research for The Secrets of Painting, I created studies of the paintings that form the subject of each chapter, using historically accurate materials. These photographs show the development of a series of images I painted at the entrance to Chauvet cave.
