According to thinktank Verdant, the record heatwaves this summer have already cost us £4.4 billion in lost economic output. Every day that our government doesn't take real action, the cost goes up.

We need real change - and we need action, right now. The Greens are calling for immediate action to keep people safe, tackle the wildfires, and protect our food and water supply. But we need to change the whole system away from profit for the few and towards people and planet.

1. KEEP PEOPLE SAFE
Create a network free cool spaces and give people support to heatproof their homes

2. TACKLE WILDFIRES
Establish a wildfire prevention strategy and fund our fire services with taxes on the oil giants fuelling infernos

3. PREVENT DROUGHTS AND PROTECT OUR FOOD SUPPLY
End the failed privatisation of water and use public ownership to protect our food systems

This isn’t inevitable. We’re not powerless to stop it. That’s why more than 230,000 of us have joined the Greens to challenge the UK’s broken systems.

But in the fact of this crisis, our government is in denial. Oil giants and privatised water are still making huge profits from our hiked bills, but Labour is going for more drilling, more profit, and more emissions.

The impact of wildfires in the UK has been huge. In France and Spain, it's been apocalyptic. Climate breakdown is already destroying our habitats and homes, and the heating means these changes could be irreversible.

We've had a summer of climate catastrophe - that will almost certainly be beaten by next summer, and the summer after that. But our government are failing us. We need to fight back.

We note the not guilty verdict delivered by a jury in this case in October 2024, while also acknowledging the response of the charity Inquest:

Chris was unarmed with his hands visibly on the wheel of a stationary car when he was shot in the head.

Martyn Blake was due to face a gross misconduct hearing, but a law change in June 2026 reduced the burden of proof for the defendant.

The IOPC decided first to delay its misconduct proceedings, announced in April 2025, until the result of this potential legislative change, and then to drop the hearing, despite the law having no retrospective power.

We echo concerns from the Justice for Chris Kaba Campaign of this “extraordinary treatment” and from Inquest of the “dangerous erosion of police accountability.”

We note most importantly the unmissable racial dimension of this and other deaths at the hands of the Metropolitan Police.

Since 2005, four men who were unarmed at the point they faced armed police have been shot dead by the Met in non-terrorist operations:

Chris Kaba in 2022, Jermaine Baker in 2015, Mark Duggan in 2011 and Azelle Rodney in 2005.

They were all Black.

We cannot divorce this from wider discriminatory practices:

Black people are up to
48 times more likely
to be stopped and searched by the police
in many parts of London.

Baroness Casey’s March 2023 Review, commissioned after the murder of Sarah Everard - also in our borough - found the Metropolitan Police to be institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic. We call upon the Met to act urgently upon these findings.

We stand in solidarity with the Black members of our community and even more firmly and steadfastly in our commitment to build a society and a borough united behind social, economic and racial justice.

A statement from Martin Abrams, leader of Lambeth Council, and the Lambeth Green Party on the IOPC's decision to hold no disciplinary proceedings against the officer who shot Chris Kaba.

We note the decision on 5 August of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) not to bring disciplinary proceedings against firearms officer Martyn Blake, who fatally shot Chris Kaba in Streatham in September 2022.

We would like to start by extending our deepest condolences to Chris’s family and friends, who have been through a four year ordeal and for whom the trauma is ongoing.

We have reached out to his family and offered our support, and would be honoured, with their approval, to be part of whatever community healing process may be possible going forwards.

Rosebank requires the public to shoulder 80% of the cost while the profits flow overseas. Meanwhile, Lambeth residents are already living through record-breaking heat. We’re calling on Helen Hayes, Steve Reed, Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Florence Eshalomi to keep their promise: no new fossil fuel licences

The full letter is below:

“Dear Helen Hayes, Steve Reed, Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Florence Eshalomi.

Reports are circulating new Labour Prime Minister Andy Burnham is ready to green light new oil and gas fields in the North Sea. We reaffirm our strong commitment to a healthy and sustainable future for the residents of Lambeth. We call on you as our members of Parliament to oppose the approval of any further fossil fuel extraction in the UK and its waters, clearly, publicly and in action, in line with your manifesto promise that no new fossil fuel licenses would be issued, and on which your voters based their choices.

Everyone who lives, works and studies in Lambeth is facing unprecedented temperatures this summer with impacts on health, education, work and transport. Those who are less well off often feel the consequences most severely. Rosebank would be an unmitigated climate disaster for the people of Lambeth, the UK, and worldwide. It would produce more CO2 than the 73 lowest-emitting countries do in a year, and would destroy UK climate goals. The Met Office has reported that 2700 people have lost their lives to extreme heat already this year.

Rosebank’s vast oil profits would help fund illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine, through a parent company Delek, which has been cited by the UN to have “raised particular human rights concerns” in the West Bank.

Rosebank is a bad deal for the UK. The public would shoulder over 80% of the costs – and the vast majority of risk – from developing Rosebank, which is 80% owned by Norwegian state-owned oil giant, Equinor. The oil would overwhelmingly be for export for refineries in Europe and would do nothing to strengthen the UK’s energy supplies or resilience to shocks. This could result in a net loss of hundreds of millions of pounds to the UK Treasury and would undermine our energy security.

Exaggerated claims of new job creation have been debunked. Only 27 new full time jobs would be created by Jackdaw, given it will be unstaffed for most of its operating life and most construction has already taken place. This is not the opportunity it looks to be.

To permanently lower bills, have a reliable energy supply and avert climate collapse we need to move faster towards renewable energy and lower emissions. We need to wind down oil and gas ensuring a just transition for existing workers to sustainable jobs in clean energy sectors. The energy crisis, the climate crisis and increasing global tensions are caused by our reliance on expensive and finite fossil fuels.

As elected members of Parliament for Lambeth, we ask you to make clear your opposition to further fossil fuel extraction, representing all the people across this borough who share these immediate concerns.”

Motion 1: Lambeth should not implement the transphobic EHRC code of practice. The 2025 Women Scotland ruling has been lambasted as ‘scientifically illiterate’. The Green Group seeks to reaffirm that trans and gender non-conforming people deserve dignity at work and in public.
LABOUR’S AMENDMENT:
Praises their own record (a lot) despite Labour’s backsliding on LBGTQ+ rights
Strips criticism of the EHRC
Takes out “trans people should be treated as the gender they identify with”
Kicks decision over EHRC code of practice into long grass

Motion 2: Lambeth should empower residents and lower petition thresholds. The threshold for a petition to be considered at Full Council should be lowered from 3,000 to 1,500, and for deputations from 20 people to 5.
LABOUR’S AMENDMENT:
Denies there was ever a problem with Lambeth not listening to residents
Says that petition thresholds were perfectly fine actually
Then suggests lowering the threshold anyway so they can claim “Greens voted against it” (you ain’t slick)

Motion 3: Lambeth should oppose Sadiq Khan's affordable housing quota cuts. The construction of affordable homes already fails to meet unambitious targets. The 300,000 families on waiting lists in the capital cannot afford for them to be slashed further.
LIB DEM AMENDMENT:
Takes out the need to build council homes because we don’t want them thank you very much
LABOUR’S AMENDMENT:
Blames any government other than the current one
Blames the Greens, somehow
We shouldn’t work with other boroughs because we don’t like their leaders
Praises their own record on housing, which you know, is a stretch

The new EHRC code of practice will exclude and harm our trans communities. Lambeth's Green councillors are calling on local MPs @helenhayes.bsky.social @bellribeiroaddy.bsky.social Steve Reed and Florence Eshalomi to oppose it, sign EDM 240 against it, and stand with Lambeth's trans residents.

As elected representatives of Lambeth council committed to equity, inclusion and justice, we call on you as our local MPs to support your trans and intersex constituents and restore their rights to the fullest, enabling them to thrive in our community.

We ask you to oppose the recently tabled EHRC Draft Code of Practice, which risks further isolating trans and intersex people from public life, and “empowers those who want to exclude trans people from services and spaces and makes life harder for those who want to support trans people.” (Gendered Intelligence).

If you have not already, please sign and support Early Day Motion 240 tabled on 1 June 2026.

We ask for the proper restoration of health and mental health service provision, with actionable targets to reduce waiting lists, so that trans and intersex people can lead healthy, happy lives. 70% of trans people have experienced significant depression.

We call for an immediate overturn of the damaging 2025 Supreme Court judgement

We have a duty to ensure that our residents can live in our borough without the threat of intimidation, and we are concerned that the current proposals threaten the right to a private life, and to access all the opportunities that Lambeth has to offer. We call on our local MPs to fight this harmful legislation, reduce this stigma and protect those who will be victimised by these changes.

In our manifesto, we confirmed our commitment to the trans community. The Lambeth Green Group will continue to campaign for justice for our trans, non-binary and intersex residents, and seek to improve their lives across our administration.
