We hope the conversations started during these two days will continue — and lead to new questions, research approaches and collaborations. 🤝 6/6
A big thank you to all our speakers, chairs and participants — both on site and online — for sharing their research, questions and ideas and making these two days such a stimulating exchange! 🙌 And many thanks to everyone who worked behind the scenes. 💪 4/6
Throughout the conference, we explored archaeological iron from three interconnected perspectives: its context, including questions of production, technology and provenance; corrosion processes and states of preservation; and conservation as part of an artefact’s biography. 2/6
Two days of inspiring presentations, discussions and interdisciplinary exchange at the conference “Archaeological Iron: Context, Corrosion and Conservation” have come to an end. 1/6 #Archaeology #conservation

In response to an international call for assistance, Germany can provide assistance worldwide for the emergency care of threatened cultural heritage, in the event of natural or human-made disasters.
The Cultural Heritage Response Unit (CHRU), developed by German partners as part of the #KulturGutRetter project by the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), the LEIZA and the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), has been officially registered in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
Through our conservation expertise, LEIZA supports the ACT4PRESPA project and the protection of Prespa’s shared cultural heritage. These finds were recovered by our conservator Matthias Heinzel. In silent remembrance.
At LEIZA, we focus on the analysis of these unique finds. Special attention is also given to the conservation of composite materials & the complex interaction between wood & iron. Through analysis (here: x-ray CT) & testing of conservation methods, we work towards sustainable long-term preservation.
When the water retreated, history emerged: Lower water levels transformed planned underwater research into systematic surveys & excavations along the exposed lakeshore. At the eastern shore of the lake archaeologists uncovered rare remains of medieval wooden architecture and numerous movable finds.
A shared effort across borders 🤝 ACT4PRESPA brings together partners from North Macedonia, Greece, and Albania, working to expand knowledge of the region’s underwater archaeological heritage and to valorize its most significant cultural assets.
Our mission: conserving and scientifically studying exceptional archaeological finds from Prespa Lake.
🌊 Hidden heritage beneath Prespa Lake: At LEIZA, we are proud to contribute to the ACT4Prespa project – part of the EU for Prespa Programme for the Sustainable Development of the Prespa Lake Area on the border between North Macedonia, Albania and Greece. #LEIZAworldwide #Archaeology

We are happy about the recognition of our work and want to thank all team members (archaeologists, students, cook, drivers) as well as the local community members who made our work and these discoveries possible. 📸 Horsepower / U. Brosseder, Noost Bayarkhuu
This year's excavations focused on Middle Bronze Age burials at 5 sites in western¢ral Mongolia (1800-1500 BCE). Their analyses will contribute to a better understanding of the socio-cultural dynamics & the integration and growing importance of the horse in eastern Eurasian pastoral communities.
