Jesus Manuel Arenas-Silva Dies in ICE Custody While Nation Continues to Grapple with ICE
Killings in Maine and Texas
Ocilla, Georgia -As the nation grapples with the horror of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) murders of Joan Sebastián Guerrero, 26, in Maine and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, in Texas, the agency’s death toll within its custody continues to grow at a record-breaking pace. Jesus Manuel Arenas-Silva, 45, tragically died in ICE custody on July 13 while being transferred from the Irwin Detention Center to the Folkston Detention Center in Georgia.
His sister said, “Jesus Manuel Arenas Silva was a loving son and brother, a caring and hard-working man who came to this country to seek better opportunities. His tragic death has left our family with an immense void and deep sorrow.”
Jesus Manuel was detained by ICE last Thursday. His apprehension by ICE at his house was traumatic for him and his family. Jesus required medications for a medical condition he was dealing with. His sister said, “We implored ICE not to take him due to his medical needs, but they didn’t listen to our pleas. They also ignored our request to at least allow him to take the medication with him, allowing only one medication.” Jesus Manual later confirmed during a phone call to his sister that ICE did not give him the medication he needed. He went without medication during his detention until he tragically died in ICE custody on Monday.
The family is demanding justice and an independent investigation into his death: “ am 100% certain that he did not receive proper care.
I deeply mourn his passing in such a cruel manner; that is why I will seek justice for him and for everyone else who goes through this, so that other families do not have to endure what we are going through. No one deserves this,” added his sister. [cont]

In this context, have to remember that building the flag into clothing had been a hippie and anti-war move, which the right argued was disrespectful to the flag (which was partly true).

The divergent outcomes in these two cases seem driven by nothing more than a desire to avoid roiling global financial markets by decreasing faith in U.S. monetary policy.2 But this divergence in outcome does mask one deep consistency between the two. In both cases, the principle variably called "accountability" in Slaughter and "political interference" in Cook-and the shift in locution is, of course, wildly telling is figured as running through the president alone. In Slaughter, like in the unitarian decisions before it, lack of presidential control equates to lack of democratic accountability, and this is bad. In Cook, lack of presidential control equates to lack of political interference, and this is good. In neither case is there any conception of democratic accountability or control that may run through any institution other than the presidency.

My deep love for Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake, the subjects of my 2014 biography Charity and Sylvia, has kept me silent, up to this point, about Tillie Walden's new graphic novel by the same title. Charity and Sylvia's story has been so deeply meaningful to so many people-their story has, without exaggeration, saved lives-that I've tried to be happy that Walden's book is making their story more widely known, even it she chose to take my title and my cover design as well as my narrative and my research with only a single sentence of acknowledgement at the end of her book in her notes section. Walden's illustrations and storytelling are wonderful, as I told her when she reached out to me during the writing process. It would take nothing away from her hard work to be honest about how it is built on my hard work. But in Walden's publicity tour, she has repeatedly made the claim to have based her book on her extensive research in the archive without acknowledging that her book is, in fact, based on my book. This false representation demands response not only for my sake, but for the sake of all the hard-working historians out there whose work has similarly been taken without credit. No, Walden has not "uncovered a chapter of queer history" in the archives, as her media interviews have claimed. She has adapted my book without credit or compensation, and claimed my research for her own. I don't doubt that Walden spent time looking at letters at the Henry Sheldon Museum, but the story that Walden tells is not to be found there. It is a story that I pieced together from years of visits to at least twenty different archives and locations across the United States, not only in Vermont but in Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, and Washington State, as well. I think this is also about "belief" and blind spots. I'm giving the quote again with highlights. This is in the para about cis women, and we need to cater to what services they "believe" are their due, bc male violence.

"I don't want trans people to be constantly pilloried on social media for being who they are and wanting to live the lives that they want to lead.

This is a very confusing story, I'd have to say badly written story. In the first para below, it says the CIA could not locate the gold bars [that were supposed to be?] In his home. The very next para details the FBI searching his home on a specific date and finding the gold.

On May 18, F.B.I. agents searched Mr.
Rush's home and found "approximately 303 gold bars, each of which weighed approximately one kilogram," according to an affidavit. Based on the price of gold, the affidavit said, the estimated value of the gold exceeded $40 million. Investigators also seized nearly three dozen luxury watches, many of them Rolexes.
The court papers do not indicate why Mr.
Rush appears to have kept so much gold, and $2 million in U.S. currency, in his home, or what work project would have required him to amass such wealth.

What I find so bizarre about Vance's attack on the Pope is it wasn't even standard "Stay in your lane!" criticism. It was "I'm going to strut into your lane and declare myself policeman!" Which is so out of the norm that once again it's hard for the media to cover it.
