Nobody would know he was choosing to be poisoned in order to find out how it was being done. Dom wanted to shout that he was right—Jed wasn’t scared. “Yeah, you’ve been automatically backing up your phone for three years now,” she said. “I put it on dark mode, which may help, but the nurse said you shouldn’t have too much screen time.”

Yusuf approached, and the boys stepped back. “What happened?”
Showing weakness invites attack. Valrik’s teaching was such a ridiculous juxtaposition with his current state that Tevyal snorted. “It started burning,” he said to Yusuf, gesturing at the sling. “It took me by surprise, and I tripped.”
Yusuf held out his left hand. Tevyal took it and stood, swaying more than he expected.

Start of the fourth quarter, it wasn’t Jed behind the center. Vince Mercer, the backup quarterback, took the snap.
“Amaron had to know this was coming. Too much playing safe is bad football.”

Tevyal licked his lips. “Waterman?”
“Yes,” Harek said, his two hands much better at unwinding the binding. “We ensure our people have water, but we do other things, as well. If I were born in Erysh, I guess I would have been a Guild member. Here, I’m a waterman.” He worked as he talked, and he had the cloth removed and the stump exposed to the air without a single jostle. Tevyal couldn’t imagine this gentle, soft-spoken man in the Guild Keep. “Hm, no infection. That’s lucky.”

Dom remembered it as soon as the replay started. He’d been on the sidelines for most of the game, as the younger receivers were getting experience and trying to earn their place on the team. If it wasn’t a comeback season, Jed would have been on the sidelines, too, long before the fourth quarter. But he’d needed the reps. The pocket had collapsed early. Jed got the pass off but took a blindside hit, the defensive end’s shoulder driving him to the turf. Jed had gotten up on one knee, shaken his head, then stood and finished the game.

The tunnel out to the field was wide and well-lit. Jogging out for warm-ups was nothing like in Chicago. There, the history of the stadium and its concrete bowl added weight and an enclosed feeling. In Santa Clara, it was more open, feeling energetic but not oppressive. The lighting was smoother, too. Dom still had a hat for the sidelines, but it felt less necessary. Maybe the two weeks between the games had helped, too.

Tevyal eased his arm out of the sling and lowered himself until his face was over the stream. He drank enough to slake his thirst, then splashed water over his head and neck. He should probably wash the stump to reduce the chance of infection, but he wasn’t sure he could get the binding back on. Maybe in Tefra he could pay someone to help him.

The waterman’s house wasn’t just outside of town. The town seemed to have shrunk away from it, an unnatural curve where the houses could have continued in a straight line. Like the other buildings, this one had a recessed entrance with a wooden door. Tevyal didn’t see anybody outside, so he knocked.

The sun was setting when they reached the opposite end of the valley. Tents lined the valley walls, lights already glowing. On the valley floor, there was a large section where the spires had collapsed inward, making a conic formation—the Holdfall. It didn’t look like the stones should have stayed in place.
