[Sweeney Todd voice] At last! My arm is complete again! They’re home from their trip to Crafted Bath, and almost unrecognisably easier. Both actions lowered (by about a foot in the case of the acoustic, judging by the difference…), and properly set up. The electric even had its fretboard oiled.
Look: you might like Andy Burnham or you might not, but it’s been a long time since a British politician at this level openly and - more importantly - positively acknowledged this.
Well, this is a delight. Romance screenwriter Nora turns the story of her marriage ending into a script, leading to a Hollywood heartthrob coming to film it in her home. Like I said, a delight. Funny, sweet and romantic, and exactly what I wanted it to be.
I’m going to wait until it cools down and not even think about sorting them out till then. I’ve got a Squier strat that isn’t too bad normally, but is obviously not enjoying the weather, and an EastCoast acoustic which is a bit of a princess at the best of times.
New stickers arrived, new stickers applied (including possibly my favourite, Mary Goore as the angel of death)!
Victory! at the guitar shop, as I manage to get them to sell me a set of spare electric strings and some nylon picks. (It’s an ongoing battle getting stuff out of them as I’m not a 17-year old boy). And because picks are the new hairbands in this house, I’ve given them a fancy little bag to live in
Just like the first book, I absolutely love this. The prose is sparse and gorgeous, and the translation by Barbara J. Haveland is wonderful. I keep running into lines like “There is too much November in the air.” and having to just pause and sit with them for a bit because they’re so elegant.
Because I’m a nerd, I made an Eighth Doctor title card for my Eighth Doctor Big Finish audio, Vespertine from the “Cass” box set
Other than Apple’s weather app having some kind of some kind of heat induced meltdown, can someone explain how Friday 5 June is going to see lows of 2 degrees and a low “feels like” of -7 in Bath? Because that feels… off.
I’m no particular fan of social media for kids - either as a person or as a parent - but I don’t love this approach. Many of today’s teens had their whole lives forcibly shifted online during lockdowns: that doesn’t just go away. The genie’s out of that particular bottle.
I thought, “I’m tired of being cold” and looked at the weather forecast. Suddenly, cold looks great. I am a Welsh woman in her mid-forties, I’m neither physically nor psychologically built for this nonsense in May. Or at all.
I definitely had some thoughts about the ending, but I wonder whether it’s such a strong, hooky concept that you’re a bit stuffed for an ending whichever direction you go in. Here’s the relevant bit of the acknowledgments btw
I read There is No Antimemetics Division over the weekend and it’s a hell of a thing. It reminded me of Only Forward, The Ministry of Time & something else (which I have ironically- or perhaps not- forgotten) all mashed up together, and it gave me an existential headache.
A book proof AND my Papa V Perpetua pin arriving? Today is being extremely kind
I just did a little happy dance when this came through the door: If Books Could Kill by Kate Eberle (PMJ, out in June) because I’m so looking forward to it. Roxie wishes herself into her favourite romance author’s next book… but unfortunately for her, that next book happens to be a thriller.
It wasn’t a fluke! I just did it again! It feels like something might have finally clicked. I really, really love my guitar
Yesteryear is absolutely WILD: I had such a good time. (You have to read this book)
I’m reading Careless People at the moment, and while it’s fair to say that nobody connected to Facebook comes out of it well, this piece of deathless prose is approaching “call a bondulance, James Name’s having a stronk” levels of the absurd
