It's not often you get to work on a game that was originally released before you were even born... and I'm no spring chicken 💀 Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns, a remaster of the 1986 Amiga classic, is now available - with French localization by yours truly!
You may not like it, but this is what peak localization looks like (Asterix: Mega Madness (PS1, 2001))
This book covers a wide variety of gameloc topics across 320 pages, from the primordial chaos of the 90s to the present day, as well as in-depth case studies. A treasure trove of information for anyone interested in the topic!
Lifetime award achievement unlocked 🏆 I've been featured in Vladimir Sechkarev's new book about #gameloc, "Искусство утраты. Трудности перевода и локализации в игровой индустрии", loosely translated as "The Art of Losing: Translation and localization in the video game industry"!
I would like to give a firm handshake to whichever mad lad/lass at LinkedIn came up with this name. Hope your boss isn't too angry at you.
I recently completed a LQA project that had me bawling like a baby (for like, good, narrative-related reasons), and it reminded me just how much I love this job. So, so incredibly lucky to still be able to do this, despite the depressing state of the industry. I'll never take it for granted.
Imagine being a designer, opening Photoshop, trying to add a layer or rasterize a picture, and getting hit with a warning: "You can't do that without the approval of your superior". This is what some CAT tool providers are doing. (Original screenshot by Andy Tang)
Anyone who has bought or moved into a new place in the last few years will soon feel like they took the last helicopter out of a war zone. Left unregulated, this blatant fraud will proliferate like there's no tomorrow. As if the real estate market wasn't already catastrophic...
Done! It looks lovely, wishing your team all the best 👏 (also because #TeamPainAuChocolat, of course)
If you ever worry over delivering a document with a typo, remember that PayPal's confirmation page still has one that hasn't been fixed for over a dozen years
You're right, translators are still needed to "verify" the slop machine's output. Except this kind of word-shoveling work is valued/paid so little no professional wants to touch it with a 10-foot pole. If you want to learn more: locdandloaded.net/2025/05/13/h...
Definitely one of the hardest challenges our team's ever had to tackle, but also one that led to the funniest Discord convos
When the author inevitably gets axed in Epic's 17th round of layoffs this year, I want her to remember that she just "wasn't efficient enough".
My weirdest claim to fame was being featured on the Square Enix shareholders website as the face of professionalism circa 2008
When I confirm segments on a group project that I haven't proofread yet and they show up in Concordance
I will start sending this to every single company that annoys me with their AI garbage (original credit: bsky.app/profile/jole... )
54% - That's the percentage of translators (out of 235 respondents) who only receive minimal or no reference material whatsoever for the games they're working on. Remember that figure next time you read a translation that sounds off in context!
I used to loooove April 1st in the games industry - companies always came up with cool/creative/silly ideas to drive community interest while having some fun. Now it's all "Teehee look at this AI garbage we spit out for the occasion, aren't we so quirky?"

"First they came for the translators, and I did not speak out, because I was not a translator."
