A walk from Selby to Goole, via the River Ouse and its confluence with the River Aire, 10am to 9.30pm Friday 24 July 2026. Twenty-two miles, one thousand and three hundred and fifty-four photographs, four pages of handwritten notes, three rivers, two canals, one map.
Big broodfish winter at sea: enter the river each spring to seek their redds—Gironde, Garonne, Dordogne. Everything’s against them: bycatch, gravel works, Golfech’s hydroelectric plant and pressurised water-cooled reactors. 'Eely' Steve Ely £2 off until 24 July longbarrowpress.com/current-publ...
Born in the Garden, died in the Flames, Cain’s spree-kill, carbon-offset Endtime. Ninety million years of life, two hundred years of death, coming down every year to a single fear: will this be the spring that none return? 'Eely' Steve Ely £2 off until Friday longbarrowpress.com/current-publ...
Daybreak in the wreck of Dogger. Gulls drifting over the slowly rising sea. Seals hauled out on sandbanks, bleached ribs of stranded whales. Dunlin and knot, swarming the mudflats, armies of silt-spearing godwit and whaup. 'Eely' Steve Ely £2 off until 24 July longbarrowpress.com/current-publ...
A symphony in four movements, Steve Ely's 'Eely' explores the themes of power, conflict, biodiversity and eels as they converge and ramify in the Yorkshire fenlands (and beyond). Available as a beautifully produced hardback, with £2 off for the next week: longbarrowpress.com/current-publ...
Four walks in four seasons: south to north, west to east, east to west, north to south. Of time and the Dutch River. 1: longbarrowpress.substack.com/p/dutch-river 2: longbarrowpress.substack.com/p/unrecovere... 3: longbarrowpress.substack.com/p/point-zero 4: longbarrowpress.substack.com/p/to-scale
Two paragliders overhead, drifting near Uffington, engines audible for miles. The tap is placed in memory of Peter Wren, aged 14 years. ‘He loved the countryside.’ No dates. I turn away and look out into a landscape in which Peter is always 14 years old. longbarrowpress.substack.com/p/slow-netwo...
"A cancelled book launch. Not the end of the world. What would that look like. Would we know it if we saw it. I rise to leave. My clothes are damp with sweat. I’ve scarcely moved in the last two hours." 'Seven Degrees': on cancellations and connections longbarrowpress.substack.com/p/seven-degr...
Local distribution, 27 June 2026. Nine miles, two-and-a-half hours, one delivery, five mallards on the river Sheaf, three overheating broadband cabinets, two swifts, one exhausted bee, rescued from the pavement and transferred to the shade of a nearby garden, one fox running.
"'To the End of the Land' is a poem-sequence working eloquently as a choir." Thanks to Jake Morris-Campbell for his review of Helen Tookey & Martin Heslop's collaboration in the current issue of Poetry London. You can buy the pamphlet & CD here: longbarrowpress.com/current-publ...
Local distribution, 25 June 2026. Five miles, two hours, two deliveries, one small tortoiseshell, one river, one cemetery, twenty-nine degrees, twenty-seven degrees, twenty-five degrees.
On Tuesday morning, after two days of troubling forecasts, we took the decision to cancel the launch for 'The Gleaning'. To be done with uncertainty. The rest of the day was spent informing attendees and updating the publicity. Undoing an event involves almost as much admin as the event itself. 1/
The offices where I used to work now stand empty. The bus station has been demolished. There wasn't time to visit the old comprehensive, which my father built in 1964, due to be levelled, once the asbestos has been removed, the asbestos that likely contributed to his death from mesothelioma in 2007.

"The plain form of the pamphlet has persisted throughout the history of publishing, its flexibility and limited extent perfectly suited to a single concern or to simple gatherings of text and images." Three new titles from @uniformbooks.bsky.social: uniformbooks.co.uk/uniformpamph...

The statue of Hughes was commissioned for, and unveiled at, the 2017 Ted Hughes Poetry Festival (most of which took place at the former grammar school). This gave us the somewhat improbable line up of Hughes, Ed Miliband (the local MP) and Vahni Capildeo (with Steve Ely and others in the back row).

"Ten years ago I passed through this landscape in a state of almost perfect unknowing. I made mistakes. I shelved the experience at the back of my mind, like a pebble plucked from the shoreline, and its lustre wore off. Too late, now, to pick it up again." longbarrowpress.substack.com/p/dutch-river
"25°C, perhaps, an estimate. Heat mitigated by broken cloud cover and irregular corridors of hedges and trees. I should be another three miles east by now. I should have taken more water. The minutes lost to calculation, adjustment, resource management." longbarrowpress.substack.com/p/slow-netwo...
