The Anglo-Saxon period has long been a passion of mine, and discoveries like Sutton Hoo are a huge part of what inspired me to start working on an upcoming Anglo-Saxon London tour.

While the identity of the person buried at Sutton Hoo remains uncertain, many believe it was an early Anglo-Saxon king of East Anglia, most likely Rædwald, one of the most powerful rulers of his time.

When it was excavated, the Sutton Hoo helmet was in a very fragile state, broken into around a hundred fragments. Through painstaking conservation and reconstruction, it was brought back together, allowing us to almost stand face to face with its wearer.

The most recognisable object from the burial is, of course, the helmet. Finds like this are exceptionally rare — in fact, only four complete Anglo-Saxon helmets from this period have ever been discovered.

Finds from as far afield as Byzantium and Sri Lanka also reveal just how far-reaching trade networks were at the time, challenging the idea of early medieval England as an isolated or insular place after the Romans left.

Delicate pieces like the belt buckle, purse lid, and cloak fastenings show an extraordinary level of craftsmanship — not to mention the sheer effort required to haul such a vast ship inland and bury it beneath a mound.

Items such as a sword, hanging bowls, and gold clothing accessories point to immense wealth and status.

What remained, however, was a remarkably detailed imprint of the ship and an astonishing collection of grave goods that made it clear this was the burial of someone incredibly important.

Unfortunately, due to the acidity of the soil, the 27-metre-long ship itself (along with the body buried within it) had long since dissolved into the earth.

The burial completely changed how historians viewed the Anglo-Saxon period in England, revealing a society far wealthier, more connected, and more sophisticated than previously thought.

In 1939, when Edith Pretty asked Basil Brown to investigate the earthen mounds on her land at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, neither of them could have imagined what lay beneath. What they discovered was an extraordinary Anglo-Saxon ship burial that had remained undisturbed for over 1,000 years.

Sutton Hoo Treasure Definitely my favourite exhibit to visit whenever I make a trip to the British Museum. This remarkable collection represents one of the most important archaeological discoveries in English history, uncovered thanks to the work of archaeologist Basil Brown and his team.
