Turns out the problem was a bit of painters tap that got stuck in there. Gingerly fished that out with needlenose pliers, and voila! Better flow! It's now among the best shower fixtures I've ever had.

Shower pressure issues solved, and I didn't even need to do any surgery! Before the flow was limp, and the pressure non existent. I worried this moght be the case with the 1.75gpm limit the shower has. But I didn't want to prematurely optimize this until i experienced the shower. It was bad.
