So what is Lace, and by extension, Phantom? Dolls They’re dolls Dolls are toys, designed with the primary intention to be played with for amusement with the second hidden intention of teaching proper social models of behavior Dolls feminine toys, where a child, is supposedly meant to act out feminine role play as practice for when the girl becomes an adult Baby dolls are meant specifically for girls to practice being mothers Dolls are blank slate of which the child can project and enact their own dreams, desires, fears and anxieties in a safe play space Objects meant for the serving the needs of their creator/mother

So back to what I asked earlier, is Lace a child? I think yes or no is a useless answer as her existence draws attention to the constructedness of childhood in the first place She exists in a liminal space of contradiction, frail and mad yet pure, deified yet objectified, beloved yet abused, victim yet violent and cruel, perfect daughter and perfect knight Neither Lace nor Phantom fit into a normative timeframe, they were not built to have a future, they require constant maintenance, the life force of another to live yet they aren’t respected as life themselves Their existence serves as foils to Silksong’s themes of legacy, futurity, and sacrifice, and the balance of life and death, parent and child I don’t think this is something to be run away from but embraced To not fit into the normative ideal of adulthood or childhood, for your timeline to not be what is considered the normative or even natural is a common experience is for those who are queer, disabled or have been abused all of which I’d argue the silk siblings implicitly if not explicitly are More than anything, they’re messy Lace in particular being the messiest victim we have in these games and I’m very pro treating the ambiguity of their age as something very messy and uncomfortable They are, however, a life, as in fully realized, autonomous individuals with agency That’s just text

The last angle is the only one where she’s beneath him on the power scale: god and disciple and it’s really a relationship between her and pochita. This is just as dehumanizing as the rest of them. To be defied is to be made inhuman, not seen as complex but just an empty vessel that the worshipper wants to fill them with. Her fatal flaw is that despite being so obsessed with chainsaw man she has no idea who he is because she never cared. She hates imperfection hates flaws hate that she has to exist in a world that isn’t pure perfection. Her only genuine connection with Denji/pochita at the movie theater and they interpret it completely differently. To pochita the existence of that one good movie makes all the rest of them worth it to her everything except the good movie must be gotten rid of. She’s a deeply empty person because she can only view the world through the lens of power and control, through what everyone is to her and not just who they are. And it kills her, kills her forever unsatisfied and lonely with the knowledge she never knew the one she worshipped and by the hands of the person who actually truly loved her.

Examining all the above are especially important in viewing her sexual abuse. Her imagery harkens to femdom dynamics but the eorticism is more unsettling than titialting. The erotism of these dynamics with heavy power imbalance where one party is heavily reliant on the other for protection and care is terrifying, it shows something deeply wrong with this dynamic, a perversion is going on. She is Denji’s boss who treats him as a pet, fills the role a mother would and is presenting herself a possible lover. She’s intimacy perverted, the femme fatale played as horror, as a commentary on social structures. There’s this contrast between her femininity and her power level, she’s a high ranking woman in a male associated field, even has a masculine uniform, but her character is very soft spoken, gentle, nurturing, maternal. Her attacks are either indirect or through coercion. The specific kinds of authority women are expected/allowed to access and the unique form of abuse it fosters is often overlooked.

That leads us to lovers, which I think is how Denji most overtly views them. Denji has no idea how relationships work, and desperately needs intimacy but he’s incapable of viewing intimacy outside of the lens of sex. He is in need of several types of intimacy including platonic and familial but has been socially conditioned to only believe that it can come from sex. Makima reinforces this viewpoint, telling him this intimacy is available sexually if he gets close to someone, which isn't necessarily wrong but she’s specifically positioning herself as the intimacy he needs, arriving after negative sexual situations to assure him even if those didn’t work out he’s still capable of getting it with her and that that intimacy is conditional on him doing what she wants

Then there’s my favorite (surprise surprise) aspect of their relationship: mother and child. L What Denji wants most deeply though he’s terrified to admit it is a family. He has no idea how a family is supposed to work and doesn’t believe he’s deserving of one. Makima is the first person in his life to be any sort of caretaker to him, and she plays the illusion of kindness, gentleness and nurturing very well. Denji comes to her for guidance, seeing her as a source of advice and comfort, and she will frequently appear to him at vulnerable times reinforcing this dynamic. He desires this caretaker role from her but is so socially stunted he doesn’t even realize it. Her pairing him with Power and Aki is her creating this kind of mock family, with them as siblings and her as the mother is giving Denji a sense of belonging, normalcy and compassion that he’s never had just so she can shatter it. Soon as she goes mask off she starts referring to Denji as a child: vulnerable, naive and easy to guide, easy to prey.

The next is the symbolic angle most textually bought up: pet owner and dog. Denji is called a dog by several people almost always derogatorily. It’s to dehumanize, to call him dirty and lowly but also as someone who’s obedient to a fault, doesn’t think for himself, incapable of existing on his own, needing an authority figure to guide his every move. She sees a child that has difficulty standing up for himself and distorts it to her advantage literally training him not to say no, just “woof”, not just dehumanizing him but teaching him to dehumanize himself.As far as it comes to Makima denji’s dog nature is not unique to him, she sees all people as pets: as in cute amiable creatures that amuse her and whom she is capable of gaining absolute obedience from because at the end of the day she’s the only one who is truly a person. She first comes onto him as if he’s special, someone she uniquely likes when really she views him the same she views every person, as not one at all.

The first dynamic they have is the one easiest to overlook despite it being the most literal: boss and employee. She is literally his boss despite from moment one their relationship not behaving like a typical work one but it’s important to keep in mind that in addition to her manipulation she has complete financial control over him. I think about the comparison of public safety to sex work, not in the sense of sex work being evil but in the sense that all systems under capitalism fall under exploitation (even when Kobeni escapes public safety, her job as a service worker is still exploitative), all systems, the government the yakuza, all require the sacrifice if your body and even your life if you want the chance of getting even the bare necessities you need to live. Her offer is “be my pet or die”, serve the system or you don’t get to live. Autonomy doesn’t exist under capitalism.

So Denji and Makima’s relationship is very multifaceted and multidimensional. There are a lot of layers to it, many symbolic, and all of which reinforce a power dynamic. Her abuse of him is emotional, sexual, financial, physical, because she and Denj are representative of so many aspects of intimacy. Makima exists as both the allure of intimacy and as the corruption of it for intimacy finds allure in control and control feeds on that allure yet intimacy and control are inherent contradictions. I think breaking these layers all down is the best way to understand their relationship and thus their abuse.
