Ann Arbor historically responds to growth. In 1852, UM President Bannister moved students out of dorms and into community, leading to a boom building rooming houses that still stand today. This house was a boarding house, then SFH, duplex, currently rental apartments. #a2council

When I introduced the resolution condemning anti-Asian hate, in the wake of residents being spit on, harassed, and blamed for COVID, I included a clause condemning white supremacy. Councilmembers argued that they condemn all supremacy. Friends, we have not yet achieved Wakanda.

My kid was so excited to spot this poster at school. This was my #a2council priority with ARPA funding. It was a fight, with critics insisting “no one asks for something like this.” Pandemic recovery dollars to those most impacted was the right choice regardless of whether they gave public comments.

The Song Foundation convenes grantees every other year for what we call, “The Joy Report.” Instead of requiring elaborate reports, we invite grantees to a day of rest, reflection, and sharing with nonprofit leaders. This is what philanthropic partnership can look like with respect and care.
