Make Votes Matter
@makevotesmatter
The campaign for Proportional Representation at UK general elections. Promoted by Make Votes Matter, 27 Old Gloucester Street, WC1N 3AX.
💬 "Putting power in every postcode means making sure that every vote counts equally, no matter where you live." Our Manchester activist Abbie responds to Andy Burnham 🔥 Our voting system means that some places get a lot more attention than others. Redistributing power means changing this.
📢 Andy Burnham has repeatedly advocated for a fair voting system. Now he has the power to deliver it. More than 16,000 people have already signed our open letter to the PM, calling on him to make it a priority. Can you help get it to 20,000? 👉 actionnetwork.org/petitions/an...
✉️ Our message to Andy Burnham: be remembered as the Prime Minister who had the courage to transform UK politics for good. Replace our broken, chaotic voting system with a proportional one that works. Sign our open letter to the new PM👇 actionnetwork.org/petitions/an...
Great to see this in the @ippr.org's new report 👇💯 To restore faith in democracy, ensure genuine representation and stop extremists from exploiting people's frustrations, we need a fair voting system where all voices are heard.
You don't need a VAR check to know that First Past the Post is not playing fair. There's been enough warnings. Time to send it off.
📺 WATCH: Angela Rayner says there's a "consensus that we can't carry on with the system that we currently have". "This is one of the issues that is starting to feel louder and louder from the grassroots." PR really feels like an idea whose time has come 💪
📢 The third reading of the Representation of the People Bill has been announced for 14 July! This means we have just under two weeks to convince as many MPs as possible to back the amendment for a review of the UK's broken voting system. Email your MP today: actionnetwork.org/letters/ask-...
💥 Philip Rycroft - author of the Rycroft Review into countering foreign financial interference - argued for electoral reform at @conunitucl.bsky.social: "We as a country need to think very seriously about this because there’s an awful lot of folk... whose vote leads to no effective representation."
"What principle could be more basic in a democracy than the principle that everybody's vote counts equally?" Today in Parliament, there was a debate about Britain's voting system. Here's just a few highlights. Thank you to all the MPs who spoke out for fair votes!
Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss, Sunak, Starmer... How many more Prime Ministers do we need before Westminster accepts that the system is the problem?
Keir Starmer was the UK's sixth Prime Minister in a decade. Now we're about to get yet another one. Please tell us again how the First Past the Post voting system delivers strong and stable governments.
It's official: Andy Burnham has been elected as the new MP for Makerfield. A longtime advocate for electoral reform, he will join the growing ranks of Proportional Representation supporters in Parliament. We'll continue to work with him to get this message heard in Westminster👇
⏰ For one week only! It's a crucial time for the campaign. That's why, with the support of our major donors, we're launching a match fund, meaning whatever you give will be worth double. If you haven't donated yet, now is the best time to do so. Chip in: makevotesmatter.org.uk/2026-wake-up...
🎙️"So many voters' votes are wasted under First Past the Post... That is leading to a broader lack of trust in politics." This morning, @lucyfisher.ft.com and @robertsaunders.bsky.social discussed electoral reform on Radio 4. We recommend checking out the whole show! www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
Today marks 10 years since the murder of Jo Cox. Her message is as relevant as ever: "we have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.” We must honour her legacy by building a political culture based on cooperation, dialogue and respect. We won't forget you, Jo 🕯️
⏰ We're kicking off our Wake Up Westminster weekend of action! In communities up and down the country, our campaigners are telling politicians to wake up to the crisis facing our democracy. Electoral reform can't wait. The time to change the system is now.
"We're having situations where parties are winning seats on 25% of the votes." As the failures of our voting system are becoming more clear than ever, the case for Proportional Representation is attracting more and more media attention. Here's @patrick-pme.bsky.social on Radio 4 👇
There is a reason why most of the world's stable and successful democracies use proportional voting systems. PR isn't just fairer and more democratic. It also leads to better, more popular and more effective governments. It's time to change the system and transform our politics for good.
Trying to fix UK democracy without scrapping FPTP is like trying to put out a wildfire with a water pistol. 111 MPs have signed an amendment to the Representation of the People Bill, calling for an urgent review of the voting system. Is your MP on the list? bills.parliament.uk/bills/4080/s...
💥💥💥 BREAKING NEWS 💥💥💥 More than 100 MPs have already signed @alexsobel.co.uk's amendment calling for a National Commission on Electoral Reform. Check if your MP is one of them - and if they haven't signed yet, email them today! bills.parliament.uk/bills/4080/s...

"All we're doing is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic whilst ignoring the huge iceberg that's actually causing it to sink." 🚢 British politics is broken. It's been broken for a long time. Just replacing this or that politician won't fix it. It's time for system change.
📺 WATCH: Today at #PMQs @ollyglover.bsky.social asked Keir Starmer about the UK's broken voting system. "Does the Prime Minister still have full confidence in the First Past the Post system to deliver strong and stable government?" "Yes I do," responded our 6th Prime Minister in 10 years 👀
"In Twickenham and Richmond Park, we now have every single councillor, but we don't have every single vote. We'd welcome electoral reform in our councils, where we are overrepresented." Lib Dem leader @eddavey.libdems.org.uk calls for a fair voting system in his response to the King's Speech:
Absolute chaos in Milton Keynes. The Lib Dems won the most seats - despite coming FOURTH in vote share. Do we need any more evidence that First Past the Post isn't working?
🎙️Our CEO Emma Harrison was on the Shelagh Fogarty show on LBC, discussing some of the results we've seen today: "If Labour were really bold, they'd think about democratic renewal and say, let's talk about changing our voting system."
Unless we change the voting system, we will see this at the next general election as well. With votes split across five or more parties, power can be won on as little as 25% of the vote. This needs to be a wake-up call.
📣 HAVE YOU DONATED TO OUR CROWDFUNDER YET? 📣 We're a grassroots campaign that punches well above our weight. We're largely fuelled by small individual donations and tons of good will (and caffeine). If you like what we do, can you chip in a few quid? 👇 makevotesmatter.org.uk/2026-wake-up...
"We're in a different era. The era of two-party politics has gone," said Kemi Badenoch on Sky News last night. The conclusion should be obvious. We can no longer operate under a voting system that pretends there's only two choices. It's time for all parties - including the Tories - to back PR.
