Had a lovely time visiting the @metoffice.gov.uk and giving a seminar on my @ucs.org fellowship research (filling in data gaps in Global South countries using machine learning)!
My third solar eclipse from Exeter, UK! I think we reached about 97% coverage here
And it’s showing up in the global data maps: the latest marine heatwave tracker from NOAA shows that there are marine heatwaves in all of the Earth’s ocean basins, with a particularly intense heatwave in the tropical eastern Pacific where the super El Niño is developing.
The oceans have quite literally never been this warm in recorded history, and 2026 is on track to be among the warmest year on record. Currently, the oceans are nearly 1.0C (1.8F) warmer than the 1981-2010 average.
If you've ever wondered why not to use the jet color scheme in manuscript figures, I was just pointed to this excellent article with great examples of colorbars that do work: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Also worth flagging that there's a near 50% chance (according to the NMME) we'll cross a +2.0F global temperature anomaly for multiple months later this year into 2027...
can you guess where the pop up storm is ⛈️ (this is quite an impressive temperature contrast for east side to west side of Syracuse!!)
Yes! Water cooling! This reminds me of Cornell’s lake water cooling system. It literally pumps cool water from Cayuga Lake to a heat exchange facility that then pumps cool water all the way up to campus. Incredible feat of engineering. Zero AC on campus
High dew points in upstate NY over time are one of the clearest signals of fossil fuel-caused climate change. Here's the number of July hours above a 70F dew point for Syracuse since 1950:
The highlight of this heatwave is the humidity. Dew points around 75F in Upstate NY is crazy. And feels-like temperatures around 105F? No thank you...
Republicans, bought out by fossil fuel companies, are doing their very best to shield ff companies from any accountability from climate change damages. It’s just insane levels of corruption. Never forget that Shell predicted this over 25 years ago: www.ucs.org/resources/fo...
How could the CA marine heatwave impact Southwest US precipitation? During my PhD, I used a Green's function to analyze Southwest US precipitation sensitivity to patterns of ocean surface temperature. Here's a map showing that sensitivity...
This global surface temperature forecast from UMiami is striking: there is a nonzero chance that we'll experience a monthly global temperature anomaly of +2.0C if a super El Niño develops later this year.
According to the Climate Prediction Center, there's about a 40% chance of a "strong" or "very strong" El Nino at the end of this year...
According to preliminary/unofficial data from coolwx.com, March 19-22 hold spots 1-4 in days with most high temperature records broken (globally) since 2010.
