No idea. Too many variables involved, too much uncertainty around each. But why is sub-Saharan Africa held to the standard of food self-sufficiency? Also, Africa isn't stuck in a Malthusian trap (see slides for argument).
Discuss: If the author had been from, say, the University of Kentucky instead of Stanford, that work would have been cited < 100 times.
