Australia's new independent National Environment Protection Agency comes online today. This agency is a key part of the environmental law reforms we campaigned for alongside an alliance of environmental organisations for years, so this is a moment to celebrate.

A new study has confirmed that bird flu (H5N1) has caused mass mortality of southern elephant seals. Today, the first suspected case has been found in Western Australia in a single migratory bird. Further testing will be undertaken to confirm that the sick bird is carrying H5N1 bird flu.

🛰️🌊🪸 Marine scientists figured out a way to see through murky, sediment-rich water by layering 200 images together. The project reveals northern Australia has a similar number of reefs to the GBR, though many are much smaller. It’s a reminder of how extraordinary marine life is across northern Aus.
