Every winter, up to 250 000 giant cuttlefish gather in the shallow waters off Whyalla for one of the ocean's most extraordinary natural spectacles, a frenetic, colourful mating aggregation found nowhere else on Earth. This year, divers report finding the reefs largely empty.

Add your name to join our 2026 investigation into supermarket plastic use: unwrapped.org.au 🔎🕵️🛒 We need eyes in every store around Australia to find out the truth about how the big supermarkets use plastic. References: 1. Clean Up Australia (2025). Litter report FY25.
The more plastic that gets produced, the more plastic ends up polluting our environment. 🔎🕵️🛒 Join our Plastics Investigation Unit to take part this year: unwrapped.org.au 📷 Microplastics shed from unnecessary plastic netting on avocados.
It's only been 10 days! 🤯 But that also means there are less than 51 days left to have your say. ⏳ THANK YOU to everyone who has already shown their support. Join them by adding your name here: https://bit.ly/3TQCiLc 👈✍️
This is MASSIVE good news!!! 🌏 The proposed expansion of marine sanctuaries around Lord Howe & Norfolk Islands would fully protect another 670,000km2 of Australia's offshore ocean. ❗But before it becomes a reality, the government wants to hear from YOU. Add your name now: https://bit.ly/4g2SgdQ 👈✍️
We're calling for the Australian Government to establish a $200 million national wildlife resilience fund, so we're ready to respond fast when it matters most. Add your support: https://www.marineconservation.org.au/actions/bird-flu/
Australia's new independent National Environment Protection Agency comes online today. This agency is a key part of the environmental law reforms we campaigned for alongside an alliance of environmental organisations for years, so this is a moment to celebrate.
We love this shot of a sawfish taken off WA's coast by Matt Deakin, one of our favourite entries from The Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition.
Funding for preparedness efforts to date has been vital and these plans now need to be put into place urgently, as WA has already done. Add your name to ask federal ministers to take action: https://www.marineconservation.org.au/actions/bird-flu/
If you find a sick or dead bird or other wildlife that you suspect could have bird flu (H5N1), remember to: AVOID contact with sick or dead wildlife & their environment. RECORD what you see REPORT any unusual illness or death in wildlife immediately via the Hotline on 1800 675 888.
The five new marine sanctuaries together span 308km2 – an area about as large as six Sydney Harbours. Marine sanctuaries work like national parks in the ocean, fully protecting marine life. 🌏 NZ and Aus still have plenty of work to do to protect our ocean. ⏳ 📷 Paul Pope / DoC
A new study has confirmed that bird flu (H5N1) has caused mass mortality of southern elephant seals. Today, the first suspected case has been found in Western Australia in a single migratory bird. Further testing will be undertaken to confirm that the sick bird is carrying H5N1 bird flu.
The species were found around Christmas & Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian territory off WA's northwest coast. Christmas Island is famous for its red crab migration. 🦀 Marine sanctuaries work like national parks in the ocean, fully protecting marine life. 📷 O'Loughlin's sea cucumber. CSIRO.

It would fully protect about 200,000km2 of ocean – that's three times the size of Tasmania! ℹ️ Under the commitment, the new Western Manus Marine Protected Area will be a huge fully protected marine sanctuary. The next step is for PNG's govt to begin the legal designation process. 📷 Nat Geo
How good is this ad in the paper today! 🗞️🥽 Australia’s $4.2 billion dive industry is too often left out of the conversation when governments decide how to protect our ocean. They're calling for expanded marine sanctuary protection of important places, including areas for fish breeding and recovery.
This moment matters more than ever for the Martuwarra Fitzroy River. Protect the river that sawfish rely on here: https://www.likenowhereelse.org.au/amcs
The primary driver of the skate’s risk of extinction continues to be dangerously low dissolved oxygen levels caused by intensive salmon aquaculture. Add your name here: https://www.marineconservation.org.au/actions/maugean-coles-woolies-send-email/
We’re in the AFR today, calling on Environment Minister Murray Watt to raise the standards for Nature Laws. Proposed National Environmental Standards are not clear, measurable, or strong. They will fail to actually protect our most threatened wildlife and their habitats.
A new study analysing more than 5,000 surveys across 94 countries, including Australia, found plastic food & drink packaging is the world's most common coastal pollution. The Aus Govt must pass the strong national packaging laws that they promised three years ago. 🌏 📷 Plastic pollution in the NT.
🎂 100 today! Sir David has long been a voice for the world’s oceans. In his 2025 film he says: “If we save the sea, we save our world… I’m sure that nothing is more important”. To save the sea, we must protect it. The best way to protect the ocean is through strong marine sanctuaries.
And to save the sea, we must protect it. 🎂🌊This week Sir David turns 100! His recent film shows the power of marine sanctuaries: “The ocean can bounce back to life. If left alone it may not just recover but thrive beyond anything anyone alive has ever seen." 📷 ‘Ocean with David Attenborough’
Sir David Attenborough turns 100 this week! 🎂 In his recent film he said: “After living for nearly a hundred years on this planet, I now understand the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea”.🌊 Help protect Australia’s ocean: https://bit.ly/4qns6VD 📷 ‘Ocean w David Attenborough’
🛰️🌊🪸 Marine scientists figured out a way to see through murky, sediment-rich water by layering 200 images together. The project reveals northern Australia has a similar number of reefs to the GBR, though many are much smaller. It’s a reminder of how extraordinary marine life is across northern Aus.
If you’re in the NT, add your name to call for money to be allocated in the upcoming budget to progress the gillnet phase out. https://www.marineconservation.org.au/actions/protect-from-gillnets/
Australia's 2 largest supermarkets face mounting scrutiny over their continued sourcing of Atlantic salmon from Macquarie Harbour, where salmon farming is hurtling the skate towards extinction, Instead of acting, Coles & Woolies are having quiet chats about how to manage the PR.
The Aus Gov has committed globally to protecting critical shark & ray habitat. Our Maugean skate is found nowhere else on Earth & on the brink of extinction because of salmon farming. Tag Environment Minister Murray Watt, urging him to list Macquarie Harbour as critical habitat.
Nearly two years ago the NT government committed to phasing out commercial barramundi gillnets from Territory waters. It was a significant boost for the future of the Top End’s fishing lifestyle, threatened wildlife, and tourism opportunities.
