There is no way the music at the Montavilla street fair stays on schedule. 30 minute sets, 5 minute setup/break between them, and 29 bands performing today across 4 stages. And it's all free. I'm not getting any work done today. #PDX
Oregon Field Guide has a nice video short on western cascades toads. Really great filming. I didn't realize you could have a million eggs, and therefore gigantic schools of tadpoles that look like ocean fish schools. 🌿 www.opb.org/article/2026...
Garish but I don’t feel like it’s pulpy enough. The cover I have is the old sf book club edition and it’s just a poor 80s dust jacket design. It makes me think immediately of him playing “I gave my love a cherry that had no stone” and John Belushi coming down the stairs to smash his guitar.

It spans his full career, portraits, drawing, explorations with graphic art and using copiers to make prints, sadly only one of his “joiners” from when he did photography. I learned of these when I was researching visual perception for a machine learning presentation and his work was genius.

Shaft is the first comic I’ve seen that has a soundtrack. This is the final page, with an author’s note on the significance of the novel in 1971 and a recommended playlist. Ironically doesn’t include the song Shaft.

Here’s some interior detail of the binder for David Walker’s work on Shaft, a 1971 novel and a popular movie that he turned into a comic. It’s great to read the script and direction, and see how they appear in black and white illustration.
One of my favorite things in NWMOCA was the writer’s area. They provide binders featuring different artists and writers. Each binder has the scripts, art direction, inked drawings, and final color products so you can see how things came together. I picked out David Walker’s for his story choices
The NWMOCA was not just a little museum. It offered equipped spaces for reading and working to illustrators and writers. Imagine being young and having resources and space like this.
