Still believe in climate action to reduce emissions, working also on resilience and equity for impacted communities. Disaster, wildfire, and hazardous waste response. Financial and environmental risk manager.
Compared to when I worked as a contractor for HECO back in the 1990s, there are more generating sites on Big Island, but transmission and distribution lines are mostly above ground so there is going to be a ton of wind and tree damage to repair.
Hurricane Lala was remarkable for its impact to the Big Island of Hawai'i. My brother reported strong winds and wind-driven rain in Hilo last night, and as he says Hilo can take the rain but they can't take the wind.
This evening, Plumas County’s Planning and Building Departments met with Greenville residents to talk about some hard topics, including moving RVs with fire survivors out of downtown commercial, multi-family, and residential parcels.
This is a bad screen capture, but you can see that methyl methacrylate is one of GKN's larger waste streams.
But unfortunately the EPCRA data are not accessible to the general public.
You also get a really good idea of the high and low points of a factory's production by looking at how much hazardous waste is being generated each year, in this case almost nothing in 2007 but nearly 360 tons in 2019.
The interesting parts of any factory are always out the back door.
I'm thinking of everyone in Guam and CNMI as they prepare for the incredibly powerful Typhoon Sinlaku. zoom.earth/storms/sinla...
Rare opportunity to access an insider view of commercial banking asset valuation and emerging risks. This is a 6-hour workshop over two days, and we really get into some deep and challenging issues. $250 but DM me for a great discount code! www.envirobank.org/page/Managin...
Big Meadows was dammed to form Lake Almanor with Kohm Yah-mah-nee (now called Mount Lassen) in the background, with its first layer of snow for the season.
California insurance town hall this afternoon - just catching it after getting home from inspecting homes for wildfire risks. But not only do I talk about preventing home ignitions, I share the good news that home hardening increases your home's chance of surviving by a whole lot!
I once created a flowchart in English of the Environmental Impact Assessment process for building a factory in the People’s Republic of China…back in the day when it was published only in Mandarin.
This is center stage in the ladies room at work, about 6 feet by 8 feet big. I am a RCRA-CERCLA gal, not a NEPA gal, but I venture to say this is harder.
I've been monitoring FEMA's processing of disaster declarations after a long pause in the spring. This is the time of year when we start to get an uptick.
Watching: Hurricane Kiko projected to weaken as it passes north of the Hawaiian Islands.
Keeping an eye on: Hurricane Kiko; impacts to the Hawaiian Islands; FEMA's planning and response
Water levels measured by the buoy at Sand Island, Midway Island, is showing the initial arrival of tsunami waves
Right now the projections for Hawai’i are that initial waves will be 1 meter but secondary waves could be 2 or more meters. Quite a bit less than what we saw at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant - GE engineers videotaped 30+ meter waves in 2011.
Whew, glad I'm not keeping track of lightning strikes in NE California today.
I see that PG&E is starting to use their alerts more strategically. I really appreciate not only the additional insight into why an outage occurred, but also a link to their EPSS page that has been a game changer for quickly cutting off energy to distribution lines in high wildfire risk areas.
What happens when the insurance companies and catastrophe modelers stop getting data that’s generated by our tax dollars and US science and research institutions? Most of the data shown below is funded by federal dollars.
I once guided a massive tour bus across this bridge. There was only a few inches of clearance on each side.
Jennifer Homendy #NTSB: "We have determined that the existing separation distances between helicopter traffic operating on Route 4 and aircraft landing on Runway 33 are insufficient and pose an intolerable risk to aviation safety by increasing the chances of a mid air collision at DCA."
Only the inland counties were issued yesterday. Here’s the change for my county. Because these are LRA changes, they affect homes and businesses in urbanized areas.
The number of destroyed schools in the Los Angeles fires is discouraging. In addition to the 5,634 students displaced, these facilities provide so many other services to the community. #CAFire
What's it like to volunteer for @WatchDuty? Amazing group of people who have been through fire professionally and personally, and we get to push buttons and spin dials on the most elegant app I've ever used.
We included disclosure requirements for data providers in the new ASTM property resilience assessment standard to address these major concerns and complexities. Many providers are not playing ball.
