Went thru my local JACL chapter's old newsletters and found this 2005 report of Sen. Feinstein's position on Judge Roberts's nomination to Chief Justice. She foresaw the threat that Roberts posed to "our fundamental rights" - equal protection, privacy/Roe, VRA, checks & balances. Nail on the head.

SENATOR DIANNE FEINSTEIN STATEMENT ON THE NOMINATION OF JUDGE JOHN G. ROBERTS, JR. TO BE CHIEF JUSTICE

JACL... took an “oppose” position to the nomination of Judge John G. Roberts, Jr., to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.... Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif) also submitted her position... Excerpts are printed below:

“There is no question that Judge Roberts is an extraordinary person. I think there is no question that he has many stellar qualities, certainly a brilliant legal mind and a love and abiding respect for the law, and I think a sense of its scope and complexity as well.
But before taking the momentous step of agreeing that a nominee serve as the Chief Justice of our Supreme Court, for what in this case could be over 30 years, I wanted to have a reasonable sense of confidence that he would uphold certain essential legal rights and protections that Americans rely on, and rights that reflect the values and ideals that make our country so great.
I don’t ask for certainty.
I don’t ask for promises—especially as to how a nominee would rule in any case—even one as important as Roe v. Wade.
But I ask for some ability to find a commitment to broad legal principles that form the basis of our fundamental rights:
• Equal protection under the law, and the ability to remedy discrimination.
• A basic right to privacy that extends from the beginning of life to the end of life.
• The ability of the American public to elect representatives that have the constitutional power and authority to protect and respond to America’s safety, social, and environmental needs; and
• A view of Executive Power that extends deference—but within the law.
Sen. Feinstein’s questions to the nominee grew out of these fundamental rights. After looking at Judge Roberts’s record—including memos from 16 cases when he was Principal Deputy Solicitor General, transcripts, written comments, and margin notes—and questioning the nominee, the senator found she could not support the nominee.

A tale of two headlines

NY Times headline: U.S. job market makes slower but steady gains / Employers added fewer jobs in June than a month earlier but the unemployment rate ticked down, a decent showing for the U.S. economy.

Reuters headline: US job growth slows sharply in June; labor force participation rate a more than 5-year low.
U.S. job growth slowed sharply in June and payroll gains for the prior two months were revised lower, pointing to a cooling labor market and prompting financial markets to dial back expectations for a near-term interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve.

The Reuters article attributed the 0.1 percentage point drop in the unemployment rate to 720K people leaving the labor force, of which the NY Times article makes no mention.

Sisters Ponyo and Kiki, shortly after their adoption and four years later. Kiki is clever and has learned some tricks and games, and Ponyo wants to join in, but... just... doesn't... get it. To Ponyo's credit, she is an excellent flycatcher.

Unfortunately not, but the truth is better

"John J. Cafaro in 2002. He leads an investment trust that is the ultimate owner of the company hired to install a water-purification system for the Reflecting Pool."

He is a portly middle aged man in a double-breasted herringbone jacket that strains at the buttons. His off-center tie draws attention to the double chin muffin top weighing down his collar. He sports a mustache reminiscent of the Monopoly man. He wears someone's robust head of hair, dark brown with incongruous greys peeking out at the temples, on a deep side part and sweeping across his forehead and down to his brows. You cannot see his hairline.

He looks like he might someday get knocked off at his favorite steakhouse.

Here's my letter

After over 20 years of subscribing to MLB Network, I had allowed my subscription to lapse this year, and I regretted it. I was missing Giants baseball and I was seriously considering resubscribing. But now, I no longer have any regrets. This Giants doesn't represent San Francisco. These players are not playing for the city or for the fans, but only for themselves. This iteration of the Giants is, pardon my language, shit.

Do better. Tell your players to shape up.
