Finally had a clear night to test out some of the new features of my Seestar S50. My favorite is probably star removal, something I’ve tried and failed at in Siril several times now. Not sure if I’m ever gonna get bored of this thing.

The Eagle Nebula, M16, taken tonight by my Seestar S50. About an hour’s worth of images, stacked and edited in the telescope.

It’s a reddish cloud of dust and gas against a starry black sky. If you squint and use your imagination, it looks a bit like an eagle with outstretched wings.

Dinosaur World in Plant City, FL is flying their flags at half staff to honor Sam Neill, and that’s the first social media post about him dying that actually made me tear up a bit.

Tonight for dinner I made pasta e fagioli and garlic bread, the latter made from a fresh loaf of focaccia that @chieflotsahair.bsky.social baked this morning. This garlic bread is one of the best things we’ve ever made. Close second to our son, perhaps.

Thanks to the Cheetos thing today I've seen several people talking about other foods that aren't foods, such as Twinkies. I figured I'd take this opportunity to introduce Bluesky to the Dashboard Twinkie. This is what a Twinkie looks like after sitting on a dashboard for three years in Florida.

A horror that is roughly the shape of a Twinkie but it's wrong. All wrong. It is blackened on the outside like it was left in a hot oven for hours. The outside crust is cracked in several places where a dark brown interior peeks through. It is covered in what might be dog hairs. It is sitting on a cutting board. I have no reasonable explanation for why we did this, and I am sorry. We will pay for our crimes.

A few months ago we took some cuttings from the huge Peruvian Apple Cactus in my mom’s front yard. We’ve already had a couple of blooms, which is exciting because I’ll hopefully get to harvest a couple of the fruit later this year.

Around here there’s a rule that says when you catch an anole indoors, you have to carry it outside like this.

Here's a project of mine from many years ago, a Deadmau5 helmet made for a coworker's kid. I'm mainly posting this to show @manningkrull.bsky.social the eyes, which were vacuum formed from plastic sheets. I had plastic ornaments that were the right size but wanted something more opaque in this case.

It's a large round sphere with a large smiling mouth cut into it, looking somewhat like Pac-man. The mouth is filled with silver metal mesh. There are two large ears that are roughly the same diameter as the head, and two large glowing eyes mounted on the front of it.

It's based on a 12" acrylic lamp dome from Home Depot, the ears are foamcore board, the mesh in the mouth is stucco lath. I used the eyes as an excuse to finally build myself a small vacuum form rig and are molded from Christmas ornaments.

Figured I’d share some of my recent photos taken with my Seestar. It still fascinates me that this stuff is just up there and it’s not that hard to see them with really modest equipment. Info in the alt-text.

This is probably the absolute limit of what I'll be able to get with my Seestar S50, as far as planetary photography goes.

This is Jupiter on the evening of 4/21/2026. If you look closely you can see four moons, Ganymede and Io are on the left, and Europa and Callisto (very dimly) are on the right.

This was captured as two separate videos, one to expose Jupiter and the other to expose the moons. Each video was stacked into single images by the telescope, minor editing performed in the telescope app, and then they were combined in Photoshop.

It’s the Crab Nebula, aka Messier 1, a supernova remnant in the constellation Taurus. It is what is left of a bright supernova that was observed in AD 1054 by Mayan, Japanese, and Arab stargazers.

It’s the Sombrero Galaxy, aka Messier 104. It's an edge-on galaxy with a bright central bulge and a dark dust lane on its outer edge. I was excited to discover that I can capture this from home, previously I'd only captured this while camping.

We have a similar thing going on here, Humphrey is kind of holding in there but Lemony Jr. is a desiccated husk. They’re both doing a lot better than Lemony Sr. from last year though, we had thrown away his moldy corpse before now.

The one of the left is mostly yellow with large brown patches on their face and rear. The one on the right is all brown and shriveled, and he is resting on his tail because life has been difficult.

Meat is in the smoker! Now I need to run and get some more pellets for the smoker so I can keep it going that long, oops!

It’s pastrami time! Once a year I tell everyone at work that I’ll make them pastrami if they bring me a corned beef from the store, usually around the St. Patrick’s Day discounts. I usually have a couple of takers.

None of you will likely see me at No Kings tomorrow, so I might as well just post my sign for tomorrow because I’m awfully happy with it.

Just saw Project Hail Mary at a small theater in a dying American mall. Nothing quite like laughing and/or crying in a theater all by yourself. I loved the book and the movie did it justice. So good. Amaze Amaze Amaze.

I broke out the immersion circulator last night for the first time in ages, to sous vide a pork tenderloin marinated in sazón, shallots, and garlic. Paired it with sautéed asparagus and homemade Spanish rice. We do okay over here, even with the cheap meats.
