wip wednesday is for outing alphinaud’s complicated relationship with friendship [ #📝 ]

Friend.

She is his friend. Not the polite term of "friend" that is used with no meaning behind it, but a true friend. Someone you can rely on. Someone you can trust. Someone he wants to spend time with.

He has had "friends" before. Ones who came over to his home after classes only to go slack jawed at the expansive nature of his family's estate. The occasional girl (or three) that hung on his every word from the moment the name
"Leveilleur" left his lips. That was the type of "friendship" he was accustomed to outside of one persistent senior during his time at the Studium.

Friendship like this — the one he shares with Amaris — feels vulnerable. It feels nice, not that he would ever admit it.

it’s been TWO (2) months since i wrote amarinaud and it isn’t even canon !!! a “what if” scenario post dragonsong war where they learn to KISS…..very cute but would never happen !!! [ #📝 ]

"Have you ever kissed anyone?" She asks and it is nothing but genuine.

For the first time since they met, he lies.

"Yes, a few times." The words feel like coals on his tongue, and he almost wishes he could take them back. Almost.

Amaris nods at this, and her lips open only to close nearly instantly.

"Why do you ask?" He asks her, barely holding back the anticipation in his tone.

"It's very silly." She repeats.

"It is not." The words slip from his lips faster than he can catch them.

"I..."' Amaris begins. "If he does kiss me, I don't want to be unprepared." She begins, and Alphinaud nods along as if she is explaining battle tactics against the most vicious of enemies. "So maybe... if you were okay with it...you could show me?" Her eyes look anywhere but his, and despite the way she dances around the topic, he can't help but push it.

"Show you?" His voice is breathless and he feels his heart half way in his throat.

"Show me how to...you know...kiss?" She spits it out and he swears he can feel the heat radiating off her cheeks more than the fireplace next to them.

He thinks back to the last time she has danced around something like this, and more specifically how he turned her down under the guise of friendship. Friends do not generally kiss.

"It would be your first kiss." He says like she isn't aware.

"I know." She replies quietly, and with not even a moments chance to reply, he sees the way her mind jumps to his potential rejection. "I'm sorry, that was strange for me to ask. Please forge-"

"I'll do it." He interrupts her, and as her eyes meet his, he swears they sparkle.

"Oh..." The sound is soft and overwhelmingly surprised. "Thank you." Her gratitude is awkward in a way so undeniably charming that it has Alphinaud scooting closer to her without so much as a word.

He doesn't know how to reply, nor does he know how to kiss. He knows so little that the polite part of him screams that he should take it back, yet when his eyes fall on her lips, he can't bare to do anything other than place his hands on her shoulder and pull her slightly into him.

"Where should my hands go?" She asks in a hushed tone.

"Wherever feels right, I would imagine." He replies in the same reverence.

Amaris hands slowly settle on his upper arms, and he can't help but notice that everything about this is awkward - proof that neither of them know what to do.

"And now...?" She asks, and Alphinaud swallows around nothing in some half-arsed attempt to ground himself before replying.

"I kiss you." He replies, and despite the uncertainty in his voice, he presses his lips against Amaris'. It's far too ridged to be considered a kiss, he thinks before pulling one of his hands to cup her cheek. His mind plays through the view displays of affection he's seen throughout their journeys — the ones that are not chaste, the ones that are backed by passion.

As he moves his lips against hers, she catches on quickly and follows suit. Their lips dance against the other, off beat and unpracticed, but a dance nonetheless.

He feels Amaris' hands clench into his sleeves, and he allows his free hand to move from her shoulder to her waist.

Seconds feel like bells, and it is thanks to the feeling of the kiss becoming slightly too wet that reminds them that they need to breathe more than each others air.

Alphinaud pulls back slightly, and as he feels Amaris' lips chase after his own he calls on every onze of self restraint to not let himself be caught. Their breathes are heavy and he is sure his lips are just as swollen as hers.

Amaris pulls her hand up to her lips, gently running her index and middle finger over them before smiling softly.

"Did.." It is now his turn to hesitate, remembering the reason they kissed to begin with. "Did that help?" He asks, and she nods.

"It did." She replies softly, shifting in her seat slightly as her hand moved to fiddle with the collar of her dress.

He loathes to say the next words that leave his mouth. "Now you are prepared for anything." Alphinaud notes, the tone awkward in ways he had thought long practiced out of his vocal repertoire.

Amaris lets out a breathless laugh. "I don't know about that..." She whispers, and against his better judgment, he leans in to her again — their lips less than an ilm apart.

"We could practice more." He whispers, his breath ghosting across her lips. "If you would like that.." He tacks on, a pleasantry that only serves to highlight the fact he would be someone who would like that.

Amaris moves closer to him, her lips brushing against his. "I would..."

That's all he needs to hear before he presses his lips against her again, both of his hands finding purchase on her waist as he gently tugs her closer to him. The sounds of their exploratory kisses are accompanied by dwindling flames in the fireplace, the proximity of their bodies now the only source of warmth either need or want.

❕MSQ TIMELINE PROG UPDATE❕ as of today, i have officially timelined ARR for the amaris-verse including every standard MSQ + side content such as the ixal society quests and crystal tower it took a total of 331 days, a little off my estimate of a full year [ #🎞️ ]

"Dealin' with these Garlean bastard's would be a lot easier without the damn scalekin trying to make us their dinner." The sound of a passing Immortal Flame's voice rips Amaris from her thoughts. It is this second mention of the beasts that litter the landscape of Northern Thanalan that causes the guilt in her stomach to flare.

Moenbryda is out there alone and yet she continues to sit in the safety of Camp Bluefog awaiting word of what she is supposed to do next — a kind command that inevitably always follows the last of the many before the it. The guilt that sits at a stable simmer in her gut questions her mind in ways she is afraid to face.

Did Midgardsormr take away your spirit along side Hydaeyln's blessing? Did the hero's heart grow dim in the guts of the Agrius mechanics and the Father of Dragon's blood?

Amaris wants to debate just how helpful she would be should she run carelessly to her side. Yda's complimentary words regarding Moenbryda's skills with her axe support one side while the multiple Immortal Flames concerned words support the other.

Is the Warrior of Light supposed to debate aiding others?

Her jaw clenches and the enamel of her teeth scrapes in a way that makes her skin crawl. She thinks of the three Garlean soldiers that met their death at her hands less than three bells ago. She killed them to keep up appearances, to prove that she was still the Warrior of Light, that she could handle something seemingly so simple. In the past, she would have trusted in Hydaelyn's blessing to keep her safe as she delivered them unconscious, the flat of her axe instead of the slice of its steel. Today she does not have the luxury of mercy. Today she harmed others because she felt she had to. They died so that she could live her half-truth.

The hesitation on what she should or should not do doesn't last long as her sense of righteousness wins against the fear of what she no longer has the promise of being able to handle. It is a poor reasoning, but it works — if she could kill to keep up appearances, she could make the attempt to save. To be there in case Moenbryda needed her. To be the Warrior of Light as she always has been, that she prays she can continue to be.

"Alphinaud?" Her voice is barely above a whisper, the dwindling crackles of the fireplace in front of them far louder than she could be under the circumstances. It's been one singular sunrise since the day they arrived at Camp Dragonhead, yet it feels that their escape from Ul'dah was over a sennight ago.

"Hm." It's a rotten noise that escapes from his lips. Muffled by the palm of his hand, it serves to amplify the guilt that seeps from his very essence.

"When I was little, before the Calamity, my parents and I often traveled through Coerthas to visit my family." She began, the tone light as her eyes stared at the flames. "I remember what Coerthas looked like then. It was almost as green as the Twelveswood, if you could even believe it." As she speaks, her eyes crinkle oh-so-slightly, and her lips pull upward just a touch.

"And?" He replies — not malice or impatience — but with weariness.

"When the Calamity struck, I can only imagine the feelings the people who lived here felt. One day, they lived amongst soft greenery and plentiful harvests. The next, they lived in what most say will be an eternal, unforgiving winter that nothing can grow in." Amaris continues, airy yet distinctly grounded. "Some people left Coerthas. They gave up and decided that it would be better to move somewhere easier. A place where they can be afforded every single comfort they had grown to need." She said before turning her body in whole to face him.

His body straightened at her movement, his eyes gaining a small hint of life in them as they connected with her own.

"I don't blame those people for leaving. For giving up. It's the easier choice, and in some cases, the safer one." Her voice is a bit louder now. Kind, yet demanding to be heard. "But those who stayed, choice or otherwise, are brave." The words are absolute, and the silence that comes after them only makes them echo deep within both of their chests.

"This is our Coerthas, Alphinaud." She looks at him, her lips pursed as she gauges his response from body language alone. "We may have lost everything. Our friends are missing. We can't go back home.." She begins, her eyes prickling with the smallest of tears. “...We've even lost the value of our names, yet we cannot allow this winter to force us to give up." Amaris continues, brushing the beginnings of tears from her eyes.

Alphinaud's face, for the first time since they had arrived, is struck with an emotion other than ennui. Parted lips and wide eyes, all due to her words. It's comforting, in its own way.

"Just like the people of Coerthas, like our soon-to-be allies in Ishgard, we will find a way to adapt." She forces a smile onto her lips, her every intention to sell her words not only to him, but to herself. "We aren't alone, and we have faced far scarier things, don't you think?" Amaris asks, awaiting a reply from him.

It is silent for a moment, and she can see the way his mind mulls over her words. Unconsciously, she leans forward towards him, her breath held in anticipation of his reply.

"I suppose that Garuda proved to be a largely more intimidating task than this." He replied, a small huff of what she hoped was a laugh leaving his lips. "I am..." He began, his gaze averting from hers before slowly returning to her. She thinks he will apologize again. Before she can well meaningly cut him off, to reassure him that he does not need to apologize for anything, this least of all, he continues.

"I am glad we will weather this winter together." He says with a small and admittedly weak smile on his lips. Amaris isn't sure if it is the sharp inhale at his words or just a delay of no particular consequences that causes him to continue in another breath. "With Tataru and Ser Haurchefant's support, we will find a way forward. Just as we always have." He continues, his eyes back on the flames that, despite how they have struggled to burn, continue to flicker.

With a relieved breath, she smiles at the flames. It isn't much, but it is a start. As the two stand side-by-side, she thinks of how one day, the frozen landscape of Coerthas will thaw. Spring will come again, for both the land and themselves.

It must.

amaris has NOT made it to the bloody banquet yet in the MSQ timeline project but my brain sure has 🏃💨 [ #📝 ]

"A little girl too busy chasing a pompous brat of a boy who doesn't even want her." Ilberd's words cut deeper than the sting of the ropes against her wrists. "Maybe you would have seen this coming if it weren't for that."

Tears well in her eyes and because of them, she can hardly tell if he looks at her with pity or disgust. His voice betrays neither.

She doesn't hear the orders he barks at the other corrupted Braves. All she knows is that the bodies that once encircled her like vultures to a discarded carcass now depart to a task beyond her current comprehension. She does, however, feel a gloved hand ghost her ankle before its fingers find purchase on her calf. This is a feeling she not only comprehends but fears. A touch she has been warned to disengage from at all costs.

She snatches her leg away in a flash, her body nearly tumbling to the ground on the process. "Don't touch me!"

Ilberd merely laughs, a sick laugh straight from the diaphragm, as he dangles a spool of rope in front of her face. "I'm not interested in what you have to offer if that's what you think." He says as he yanks her back by the leg, pulling her ankles tight.

reached lyse’s first (fanon) nameday in the MSQ timeline project!!! the concept of her being unable to truly celebrate her nameday because she is still clinging to living life as yda grabbed me by the NECK [ #📝 ]

In the Rising Stones' late afternoon quiet, Yda's eyes tug towards the hand carved calendar propped perfectly upon Tataru's desk. One of the calendar's features is a small wooden circle, painted in pink, that can be moved to signity exactly which day it is. Assuming that Tataru had moved the circle already, which is most assuredly a smart guess, she finds that today of all days is the 5th of the 3rd Umbral Moon.

Today is her nameday. Or it would be if she did not don her sister's well-loved garb and hard-earned Archon marks.

Today is Lyse's nameday. Not Yda's. In the curious case of her, she finds it is hard to celebrate as either woman. Yda would have made a point to send a letter with a favored treat or three to Lyse so that her nameday was appropriately celebrated. Lyse would have made the journey from wherever she was to celebrate with her sister.

Neither of these options are possible for them. Yda is dead, and Lyse scarcely exists in any way that truly matters.

Yda wouldn't dwell on such a dismaying thought, so Lyse — under a mask both physical and psychological — chooses to do the same. She would have done well in her course, too, if it were not for the sound of Papalymo storming through the doors of their common space.

"Another wrong delivery!" He bemoans as he walks over to where she sits, a small box in his hands.

"Another?" She asks, her eyes transfixed on the box. He nods as he begins to undo the delicate twine bow around the box.

"Another." He repeats it as if it is a mark of some sort of scandal. "Cakes that rightly should go elsewhere continue to arrive on our doorstep."

The word cake is accompanied by the lifting of the boxes top. The action is not unlike a chest revealing a hidden treasure — one dripping in lemon-and-grape syrup. A traditional Ala Mhigan cake, generally reserved for celebrations, here in the flour created flesh.

"Someone ordered this? She asks, skeptical because it is unbelievable. The timing is too coincidental. The contents of the box too fitting for the occasion.

Papalymo nods undeterred. "Apparently so. "Tis a right shame, considering the contents."

The two look at the cake in an odd sort of anticipation, almost as if it will sprout legs and perform a dance. It doesn't, yet it doesn't sate the anticipation of other things, most notably how delicious it would probably taste if they enjoyed a bite of it.

Yda hesitates, her mouth dry. "This is her favorite." She says, her voice uncharacteristically soft.

"I know." Papalymo replies in a matching tone.

"Today is her nameday." She adds, the stark white lie of her identity overtop the truth of it all.

"I know." He parrots at her. It is Lyse's nameday. It is her nameday.

It is unspoken between them on how these sort of things never get easier. The first nameday was hard — both Yda's and Lyse's. There were no cakes, and assuredly not the emotional fortitude to enjoy them.

Almost seven years of namedays that are completely and utterly wrong, and yet, today there is cake. A cake that Lyse has always loved.

"Go on, then." Papalymo insists, pushing a fork towards her. "Wouldn't be good of us to let it go to waste."

Ya doesn't argue. She presses a piece of the cake onto the flat of her fork and downs in all in one perfect bite.

She couldn't complain. Not this nameday. Not when she is sharing a favored cake with the person who knows her best. Not when everything, for just a moment, feels perfectly normal.

The universe as we know it would end, and there is no way to prevent it.
