Throughout the last few weeks, a new habit has been added to Alhaitham and Kaveh's routine. One they should probably talk about. Eventually. At some point. Ignoring the sumpter beast in the room forever is just not feasible.

The only problem is that falling in bed together remains the easiest choice every single time the possibility arises.

Summary

The man might have been twenty or two hundred years old, the sharp lines drawn on a face that now sported the subtle blush of the living ethereal, too graceful to abide by the laws of time. Thin pupils splitting lavender eyes one could fall endlessly in, ears subtly pointed—the more Wriothesley looked at him, the less idea he had of what he was.

“I am grateful for your kindness,” the stranger said, handing Wriothesley his burgundy coat; his voice flowed like water beneath the perpetual ice of Meropide’s creeks. “I apologise I cannot offer anything in return.”

As he grabbed his coat, Wriothesley’s attention fell on the scars coiled around the man’s pale wrists, peeking beneath the frilled cuffs of the gown Sigewinne had provided him with. Those were the kind of desperate burns rubbed against unspeakable shackles.

“All I need to know is your name and intentions in my domains.”

(Duke Wriothesley of the Fortress of Meropide finds a mysterious man frozen half to death in his morning walk. He can't not take him in.)

“What’s wrong?” he asks. Kaveh raises an eyebrow, prompting him to elaborate as though he were clueless. “It’s not like you to leave a gathering without saying goodbye to even the pets.”

Kaveh breathes out slowly. “You of all people should get how bothersome the music was getting.”

Alhaitham’s brow wrinkles.

“Our room is just upstairs and the walls are insulated, if it’s the noise that bothered you.” Kaveh tears his gaze off him. “You’ve been uncomfortable the entire evening.”

“I haven’t,” Kaveh snaps, almost too fast, clasping his hands together. He hates that his fingers are unsteady again. “It’s my mother, why would I be uncomfortable? What would that make me?”

“You have no idea what you're talking about.”

They both knew this to be a lie. The greatest rift between them had come about precisely because Alhaitham knew too much—because he saw too much, because he cared beyond the amount he was allowed. Because in his determination, he blinded himself to what might come out of dragging the core of the issue out into the light to be examined, because he hoped that Kaveh would stop feigning that pain he carried deep within his very flesh served any purpose and consequently discarded it.

In a catastrophic miscalculation, Alhaitham wound up being the variable Kaveh decided to remove from his life.

Even now, Kaveh refused to let go. He'd lost everything, almost his life, had broken under the burden he'd made his as a child—and yet he unflinchingly cradled a monster made of sorrow and guilt close against his heart, nurtured it as though unaware it had long since grown great enough to devour him whole.

Sometimes, Alhaitham wondered if it would be ever possible to cut the grief off Kaveh’s soul. Or if they were so deeply interwoven that in bringing a blade down where they were joined Alhaitham would not only get rid of the monster, but have Kaveh bleed out in his arms.

He wondered if that was what Kaveh feared.

“I think you know too well what I'm talking about,” Alhaitham muttered. “And I think you don’t know who you are, when you aren't miserable.”

Being on the receiving end of Kaveh’s anger is, actually, not that bad a place to be. Becoming a target takes little effort, and the rewards are immediate because some days it seems Kaveh likes being annoyed with Alhaitham more than he does Alhaitham himself. Which—again—is not that hard to achieve.

Nonetheless, at some point since the beginning of their cohabitation wanting to draw all of Kaveh’s anger to himself in order to preserve his roommate’s sanity intact stepped back in favour of utter fascination with the shifts of his expression themselves. Something about the glow in his eyes, exacerbated by the characteristic way he has of narrowing them, carving a frown between those skittish eyebrows, compels Alhaitham to seeking it out again and again. To memorise the shade indignation dusts across his cheeks and learn the beat of his gestures by heart. By the time Alhaitham realised, provoking Kaveh was a thinly veiled ploy to bring him to the liveliest version of himself as much as it was a scheme to give his vicious thoughts an unbothered target
