I really loved the explanation one of the devs put in the thread in response

response from a developer in the initially listed thread:
Previously who you were interested in and your body type were much simpler.
Everyone's body looked the same and you could romance anybody.
This is maybe more "normal" or "typical" to what games do.

This works in games like stardew valley for example, where the player is always in control and the character's body is very small and pixellated so you cant really see a difference.

However in ostranauts sometimes your character does stuff on their own in free time, and the characters are more visually detailed in the paperdoll, so more clearly a specific sex.

A frequent complaint we had is that somebody wanted to roleplay themselves as a straight man, they left their character auto-tasking in the bar and ended up randomly flirting a bunch with other men, they felt like the game had betrayed their expectations.

So to help the game line up with player wishes we had to make those starting options more specific. Now if you set yourself to be a straight man and go on autotask you wont initiate with other men and if another man comes to flirt with you, you will automatically turn them down.
