I have a work in progress problem. The pathological accumulation of projects without ever finishing them. Also the habit of picking subjects that are way too complex to complete in a reasonable amount of time. I need to get this sorted out somehow.

“You know what,” Spellmaier said between breaths. “That wasn’t half bad. You’re coming along.”
Burnett grinned proudly, even though the sarcasm was unmistakable.
“Gabe, you look like shit,” Spellmaier greeted him.
Sheppard took a slight bow and stifled a yawn.
“The shipment is ready and waiting for pickup,” Spellmaier continued.
“Right on time,” Burnett praised, tapping off several points on his digital checklist. “The elevator will be ready in an hour. The containers should be at the terminal by then. Can you manage that?”
Spellmaier tilted his head and shot him an indignant look. Burnett checked off another item.
“Did you finish the… other thing?” Burnett asked.
“You bet.” Like a magician, Spellmaier revealed a small case wrapped in dark blue velvet, delicate and finely crafted, as if it had come from a jewelry store.
Sheppard lowered his head, laughing and sighing at the same time. Not again.
With shining eyes, Burnett opened the case. “Exactly how I imagined it.” He punched Spellmaier lightly on the shoulder. “Dankeschön.”
“Who are you ditching this time?” Sheppard asked. His leg began to twitch nervously, and his shoulder ached. Despite the Moon’s low gravity, the case in his hand was gradually becoming heavy.
“Larissa, of course,” Spellmaier answered with a grin after Burnett ignored the question.
“Oh?” Sheppard raised a brow. “Knowles, from B shift?”
Burnett snapped the case shut and shrugged. “Just a small token of appreciation, nothing more.”
“More like a small token of your sociopathy,” Spellmaier said. “You know, those things aren’t easy to make. I should start charging you.”
“And I should mention in the quarterly review that you’re using company resources for personal favors.”
“Better not.”

Her warm hand brushed his cheek. “You think we’re making a mistake, don’t you?”
If Carol had one annoying trait, it was that she could read him like an open book.
“I’d be pretty late to have doubts now, wouldn’t I?” Sheppard tried to smile, but Carol’s gaze cut straight through him. “You know…” He couldn’t put that strange feeling into words that was rolling through his gut like thick black fog. “From here on, there’s no turning back. It feels like the end.”
“It is an end,” she admitted. “But it’s also a start. The beginning of something new.” She took his hand. “Something good.”
He noticed himself drifting away from her, the coin still hanging motionless between them.
“I know we wouldn’t be here if she hadn’t…” Carol bit her lip. Her eyes shimmered in the light like the silver coin. She let her gaze wander and took a deep breath. “If she were still alive, we wouldn’t be here today. But we’re not doing this to forget her. We’re doing it to remember her. We’re giving it meaning. A meaning bigger than all of us.”
Her voice sounded distant, lost in the noise of his thoughts. Sheppard fought against the memories, just as he always did. He grabbed them and shoved them into black sludge. Forced them down into a bottomless, dark well, where all the other terrible images of the past lingered.
At last, he nodded and gently touched her hand with his fingertips. “I hope you’re right. I really do.”

Dazed and gasping for breath, Sheppard stared out through the opening into space, at the grotesquely twisted shapes of the umbilical cord. “I should have let you freeze me.”
He made his way through the skeleton in the vacuum of space toward the terminal’s airlock. Behind him towered the gigantic spacecraft, larger than the biggest ocean freighter. Before him lay the spherical space station, from which the framework of the dry dock spread out like spider legs.
Knife-sharp shards of metal were lodged in the massive door that had somehow managed to seal itself. He pulled it open and drifted into the airlock chamber. With another tug on a lever, the door shut tight and breathable air flooded the chamber.
Sheppard tore the helmet from his head as the inner lock opened, droplets of sweat flying in all directions.
The lifeless eyes of a worker stared back at him.
