NUMBER ONE - DON'T TAP THE GLASS #TylerTheCreator followed up his conceptual, but flawed Chromakopia with something with simpler ambitions: fun, frenetic, and immaculately conceived pop songs which embrace every facet of Tyler's talents. Endlessly replayable, endlessly danceable, and endlessly fun.
NUMBER TWO - GOLLIWOG #BillyWoods paints with horrorcore brushstrokes in an effort to fully describe the futility of black existence within modern oligarchic, racist, and oppressively capitalist society. Demands multiple relistens. Shouts to @boundo.bsky.social for making me a Billy Woods believer
NUMBER THREE - HERETIC #Ektomorf released their best album in over a decade, a dark examination of lead singer Zoli's inner psyche as he grapples with grief, depression, and existentialism. A brutal listen that forces empathy from anyone who grants this album the time of day.
NUMBER FOUR - POTLUCK #BruiserWolf released two incredible albums this year, but I'm partial to Potluck, which leans harder into punchlines, humor, and his masterfully unique flow. Bruiser Wolf is the stand up comedian of the underground rap scene. Hilarious, charming, and unforgettable.
HONORABLE MENTIONS (cont.) #PsychedelicPornCrumpets create an incredible wall of sound. The final mix and master may be the true star. #LadyGaga made a daring pop album that I didn't expect from her at this stage. #Whitechapel blows your brains out in this blisteringly heavy concept album.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: #DannyBrown came back with sobriety and joy as he experiments with some of the most exciting artists in the game. #Clipse came back with the best verses of both Pusha T's respective careers. Malice was a huge pleasant surprise here.
