(they/them) I'm passionate about explosions and skeletons. Buy Virtue's Heaven on Steam! Subscribe to my Newsletter:
I'm a bit concerned that I'm oversharing this post a bit much, but I also rarely make something that I'm genuinely proud of.
Had a window seat on my way back yesterday and obviously I had to try and take pictures of stuff (I don't fly all that often).
Oh no! Only two days left to get the "Final Videogame" at 25% less than its usual price? I've heard, if you buy a copy you hasten the demise of videogames, and if that isn't a reason to give me some money (I'm broke) I don't know what else could convince you: store.steampowered.com/app/1929860/...
On one hand, my kitchen is now uninhabitable. On the other hand, I have this. So who can say if this was the correct decision or not.
And done! Neo Exdeath decided to be evil and immediately went into "I'm going to murder your party now" mode the moment he went down to his last piece. Glad he chose to do Meteo and then Maelstrom and not the other way around though.
The plan was to have Krile hide, and then rush out once Giga Flare is charging to hit it with Toad. I messed up the timing and got hit in the face for 3000 damage, but that made all the more funny.
As much as I kind of hate this party composition, it does force me to think a bit more about some bossfights. Found this funny set up for Melusine where I could repeatedly charm her, which then gave me enough space to keep attacking and hoping to score enough crits to get through her hp.
it went okay at first: I managed to get both enemies down, but messed up the timing which left me only with poor old Grandpa Galuf. I then spend 20 minutes hiding from the cannon, running out of hiding, punching it once, and going back into hiding. Here's the last 2 minutes of it:
Look who's going to give a talk about their favourite subject for @glasgowindiegamesfest.org next month:
I hate the word "friction" as a descriptor for idiosyncratic design elements in videgames and I wish people would stop using it:
Trying to fix some issues with my current colour palette and if you ever want to have an illustration what it feels like to be red-green colourblind, these three colours look almost exactly the same to me, especially 1 and 3.
Commenting my code with warnings for a future version of myself who will definitely still get confused and spend a day yelling at code not doing what they thought it would do.
Today at 8pm CEST, me and @evegoldenwoods.bsky.social will continue our playthrough of "Leid vom Meeresfall" (also know as 'JRPG Game'. The audio will probably be more balanced, and I've relieved the party of their XP debt. www.twitch.tv/earnestmokka
Last of the scenes done (for now). Good thing about having drawn several of these now is that I'm starting to assemble a nice catalogue of assets that I can modify/re-use. Still struggling with perspective, texture and such, but I'll get there maybe eventually at some point...
Turns out thinking of these as locations where I put down smaller sprites, instead of bigger images I have to draw helps a ton in actually putting these together. Still lots to learn, but it's easier to learn anything when you actually make something, instead of thinking about it.
Oh, I also did a bit more work on the map. It's interesting how it turned out a bit board-gamey without me explicitly going for that kind of look.
Actually go over my fear of being incompetent at art and put together one of the backgrounds for the "scenes" in my JRPG game. Actually turned out okay for a first attempt. Still struggle with perspective and texture, but now that something exists, I can tinker around with it.
Today, I de-placeholderized what currently exists of JRPG game's overworld map.
My goal for the Stream is to turn the game's second Boss into a Slime while using only the tools that the game gives. No sneakily giving myself abilities via code or anything. I'm going to stuff Monsters in a pot and cook them with math!
Played around with ublock filters and managed to get rid of all video thumbnails on my subscription page. No more giant distracting faces for me.
You could also play "Ten Battles to Destiny". It's free, has a browser version and only takes around ten minutes to play! It was a really nice way to explore some of my ideas for JRPG battle and progression design! The screenshot shows my third-favourite joke in the game. mokka.itch.io/tenbattles
About 90 minutes ago, I thought "What if 'Man' in my JRPG game has a move that lets him utter random facts about the monsters you encounter, as a weird equivalent of other game's 'study' ability?" Obviously with me being me, it is not always helpful, or sometimes it's helpful, but not obvious.
during one of my conversations after I published this post, I stumbled into the term "Industrial Games" as a term to distinguish between smaller games with who mainly focus on reflecting the game's industry's broader approach and those that don't.
People say that you shouldn't mix your pixel resolutions and what have you, but they forget that upscaling a sprite in the right moment can be very funny.
