Moors for the Future Partnership

Moors for the Future Partnership protects and restores damaged blanket bog habitats across the Peak District and South Pennines.
1/2 Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Minister for Nature) Mary Creagh CBE MP met members and guests of the Great North Bog today, to discuss the value of peatlands to the UK and to see peatland restoration in action.
In periods of drought, sphagnum can help to keep the moors wetter for longer by retaining water. In heavy or prolonged rainfall, it helps water to be released more slowly down into valleys, towns and roads further down in the catchment.
Did you know that sphagnum mosses can hold up to 20x their own weight in water? This ability makes sphagnum one of the key elements of a blanket bog that is resilient to the effects of extreme weather, from droughts to extreme rainfall. #SphagnumMonday #Biodiversity #NaturalFloodManagement
We had a great time at New Mills One World Festival today. Thank you to the organisers, and to everyone who came to say hello 🙏🌱 #NewMills #PeakDistrict
Moorland pools provide habitats for invertebrates, including dragonflies. Adult dragonflies are incredibly successful hunters, capturing up to 95% of the prey they target. They can fly in all directions, including backwards and sideways as they hunt for small flying insects.
One of the joys of going to site is moments like these. Our Science team enjoyed seeing some of the last of the summer's cottongrass on a recent moth survey. #Peatlands #Conservation #Biodiversity #Science #MothMonday *We follow our summer site visit protocol to avoid disturbing wildlife
Have you seen our Bogtastic cards, supported by @severntrentwater.bsky.social? These fun and informative cards introduce you to the wonderful species that live on the moors. You can pick them up at our Bogtastic van at public events, or download them now from our website. tinyurl.com/ymn9kb99

We’ll be saying hello to the lovely people of #Manchester at the Patagonia Manchester store this Sat 6 June. Say hello if you see us and let us know your questions, ahead of a peatland-themed film night in store on Thu 18 June (watch this space for more details). @patagonia.com #peatlands
We're working in partnership with Yorkshire Water to increase biodiversity. Yorkshire Water is funding a scientific study into how to reduce the dominance of Molinia (or Purple Moor Grass), and thus increase biodiversity. tinyurl.com/4wypa6ce
A huge thank you everyone who volunteers with us 🙏 From #sphagnum planting and science monitoring in all weathers, to helping the communications team and doing behind-the-scenes tasks, thank you to everyone making a difference to #peatlands 🙏 #VolunteersWeek
However, many of the plugs were not looking their best, especially in the drier areas - while they haven't lost any significant volume, they have taken a hit, and we will continue to monitor them over the coming months. There is plenty more research on this site yet to come. #Peatlands #Sphagnum
Of the 198 plugs which were in the burnt area, 195 were still present. Although some plugs were smaller than when they were measured at the end of March, the majority had grown in that time - on average, the plugs were 11% bigger than at the end of March.
After the wildfire near the Snake Pass summit at the beginning of May, our science team returned to the site to check on the sphagnum plugs we planted in the area over the winter. While our plastic monitoring equipment had melted in the heat of the fire, 98% of the sphagnum plugs didn't burn away.
Last night's North West Tonight featured Project Creation Officer Jody talking about how to keep the moors safe from wildfire, with footage from our documentary After the Smoke Clears. Watch from 04:50: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...
Last night's BBC East Midlands Today featured a report on the moorland fire at Snake Summit, where Senior Research & Monitoring Officer Tom Spencer talked about the after-effects of wildfire, and the resilience of sphagnum under those conditions. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...
1/2 We've got lots of plans for chatting to visitors to the Goyt Valley this summer. We'll be at Errwood Hall car park this Thu 28 May, when we're teaming up with #Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to spread the word about how to keep the moors safe from wildfire. 📸 Photo from #Buxton Spring Fair

Sir David Attenborough is an inspiration to everyone in the world of conservation, so we join in with celebrating his life and contribution to caring for our environment on this, his 100th birthday. 10 years ago, we were honoured to receive this message of support for our Community Science Project.
Moors for the Future Partnership’s research showed that inoculation with Sphagnum plugs was generally successful in terms of survival rate a few years after planting, but has unsurprisingly seen mixed results in terms of growth rates, likely to be related to the differing conditions of each site.
Under the @severntrentwater.bsky.social -funded Moor Water project, our Science & Monitoring team conducted monitoring to assess the survival and growth of Sphagnum plugs, and progress being made towards achieving Favourable Condition for blanket bog. www.moorsforthefuture.org.uk/__data/asset...
The documentary was filmed in the months leading up to the one-year anniversary of the fire, and is being released on the anniversary of the fire as a reminder of the importance of protecting the moors. The film can be viewed on Moors for the Future Partnership’s YouTube channel now.
The documentary showcases the voices of communities affected by the 2025 moorland fire, which burned over 1.7 square kilometres of moorland for two days. The documentary shows the damage caused by the fire and conservation efforts to help the moor’s wildlife recover.
Tomorrow we'll be sharing a newly commissioned film, After the Smoke Clears, to mark the anniversary of the Goyt Valley wildfire. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to watch it tomorrow: youtu.be/6jvGiHLCfKs?... If you see smoke or flames on the moors, don't wait, dial 999. #Peatlands
We were at Ilkley Grammar School, the Kinder Trespass Festival in Hayfield, and the Big Bog Weekend at Hardcastle Crags @nationaltrust.org.uk. Look out for where we're going to be appearing over the Spring and Summer. Next up - Buxton Spring Fair on Bank Holiday Monday!
Our public engagement season for 2026 got off to a very busy start last week, as we attended three separate events, spoke to lots of people, and covered many miles to bring the message of the importance of peatlands and what everyone can do to protect them - to a wide audience.
We're looking for a Project Support Administrator Apprentice who can work as part of our friendly team to help our Programme Office run smoothly and support the management of administration across our projects. Closing date: 17 May Find out more & apply: careers.peakdistrict.gov.uk/PeakDistrict...
1/2 Happy #WorldCurlewDay! It’s always a joy to see and hear curlews in the uplands of the Peak District & South Pennines. They have a long curved beak used for finding invertebrates in peat & mud, and a call often described as “bubbling” as it makes the call which gives it its name: “cur-lew!”.
1/3 Wishing a very happy birthday to @peakdistrict.bsky.social, which was established 75 years ago today. The moors of the #PeakDistrict and #SouthPennines have changed significantly over the last 75 years, as these more recent pictures show (2019 and 2021).
1/2 On Wed 22 July at 6pm, Matt Scott-Campbell, Partnership Manager at Moors for the Future Partnership, will be at this year's @buxtonfestival.bsky.social, taking a deep dive into peatland restoration - working in partnership to create resilient moorlands at landscape scale.
