the next major threshold is this one. again, it's revealed loads of things that don't have city status! Reading! Swindon! Basingstoke! Worthing! Crawley! Guildford!
on the south coast we get Bournemouth (a town in a unitary authority) and not Southampton or Portsmouth (cities with city status). zoom in further, still no Brighton but still more other non-towns! Poole! Eastbourne! Various places in cornwall! Ipswich! Weston-super-Mare! Luton! If they somehow...
those are probably chosen by population of agglomeration (plus Edinburgh and Cardiff, although no Belfast). if we zoom in a tiny bit more we get a bunch of other centers of agglomerations. you will note that Leeds is appearing in the same size text as Manchester and then all the others are smaller.
this "Brighton doesn't show on Google Maps solely because Wikipedia are being annoying pedants" thing really doesn't stand up to closer examination. let's look at what actually happens with their prioritsation of place names. at this level, we just get a few places...
this is the area in question (fig 1). preston's boundary is the river ribble, and there's the districts of south ribble and chorley to the south of it. these are very much part of the preston travel to work area (fig 2). instead, preston is being paired with lancaster, way off to the north.
we have now had so many primes ministers that i personally created wikipedia articles about two of them (May and Burnham) and am praying I don't achieve a third (Farage). [there is an error in my stub for Farage. he had contested 3 parliamentary elections and lost his deposit once at that point.]
fucking yeah. bit earlier than street date, which makes up for the time I went to try and buy The Last Human in 1994. (which ended up not existing in the form we were being promised.)
keep finding weird things. what's this, an au pairs listing from 1996 at the Astoria 2, when they were supposed to be broken up?
from July 1995, a Pullover + Cecil + Kenickie gig at the Garage in London. this one feels like it's probably the Wearside Kenickie, although it being in the Fulham and Hammersmith Chronicle did make me wonder if it could be the south london one.
found a bunch of other listings of that gig, and also a second (well, earlier, so first) one, on March 9th 1994! and then I have a live review of a gig in Beckenham in 1995 that mentions "support band Kenickie deserve a mention for their interpretation of [...] Sympathy for ther Devil".
just discovered evidence for a second Kenickie. (a gig at the half moon in putney a month before they did they did their debut gig up in tyne & wear)
Hallelujah! Definitely not buzzcocks, certainly not seen by many people, (not clear if 500 is the studio audience or the audience at home), possibly entirely made up.
seven years to the day since i posted this to a facebook group late at night. by the time i woke up sober i was banned from the group.
bit suspicious of Nick Briggs's appearance in the Daleks' Master Plan episode 1 tbh.
regret to inform my readers the government have not gone for the "three seaxes" option in essex.

this is one of these situations where you should not use the company's silly capitalisation
so sad to hear about Rob Grant's death; co-creator of what was basically my first fandom, it's inestimable how much influence he had on my life, my writing, maybe even my career path. thoughts with his family and with andrew. (and only the other day I stuck (yet another) reference into the MUD.)
