an undigested bit of beef

rain and thunder wind and haze i'm bound for better days
All I know is, this is the best button in cinema history:
"The King in Yellow" (Raymond Chandler, 1938 💙📚) Despite the title and the plot (hotel detective gets tangled up with hard-partying band leader), this story doesn't really stand out in Chandler's ouvre. Some good bits, but not nearly as artful as the novels that would follow. However...
Man, I gotta get a patch kit for my ocelot, it's completely deflated.
Or sometimes just, y'know, a reasonably-sized peck... peccer? It's a peccary.
Used to be you couldn't scroll ten posts without stumbling across a big fat hog.
Sometimes you get nostalgic for the early days of Bluesky, and you just gotta post hog.
You actually do fight that guy in Plague Tale: Requiem. I mean, he's just a sketchy beekeeper, you just sling a rock at his head or whatever, but still, creepy.
Okay, yeah, let's do it: Early character sketches for a game I am intermittently messing around with. (I have revised versions of a couple of these, but they need to be resized and exported and I'm hell of sleepy.)
When you use chatGPT to generate your survey about chatGPT:
First picture is the rear wheel well, where he initially hit & apparently just pressed real hard to rub the paint off? Then rode up the side, doing surprisingly little damage, before crunching on the *front* wheel well. Honestly I expected it to look a lot worse, cause it was a hard prolonged shove.
RISE OF THE GOLDEN IDOL (🎮 2024) More GOLDEN IDOL is good, but RISE is just kinda worse along most axes. CASE was a portrait of a rot that bubbled and grew and ultimately blossomed into terror; RISE is a disjointed and unfocused landscape dotted with bumbling randos randomly bumbling.
Picked up a little countertop dishwasher, and it's only been a couple hours but I think this thing might be a game changer. If hand-washing dishes is a struggle for you (for disability reasons or otherwise), it's very much worth considering.
FAUST / ERIC (Terry Pratchett, 1990💙📚) The one Discworld book I've never heard anyone talk about, and now I know why. A handful of fun-ish pastiches strung together by an unexplored and unenthusiastic plot. Pratchett's style is all over this one, but his characteristic depth is completely absent.
Well, there's something to be said for consistency, right? Right?
In less terrible news, last week's fruit discourse prompted me to get a mango. It was a basic-ass American grocery store mango, but it was still real good on the scale of Fruit I Have Regular Access To, & pretty good on the scale of Mangoes I Have Had. Plus I didn't even injure myself carving it!
Of course, on the other end of the spectrum, you get YOJIMBO (1961):
NIFFT THE LEAN (Michael Shea, 1982 💙📚) Heist-oriented Conan-esque fantasy, w/ most of the problems that implies. The style is not amazing, but it sure does go places--the twists are sharp, & the occult weirdness is big, bizarre, & horrifying, as well as horny & ridiculous, usually at the same time.
1872, 1961, 1965, 1973. The idea that kids, or people in general, can only appreciate art created within their lifetime is ridiculous.
So there's bad marketing, and then there's sending targeted vaginal care ads to a person without a vagina, and THEN there's giving your vaginal care cream a name that was clearly devised for a colon cancer screening kit.
@plumberduck.bsky.social Will, forgive me if this has come up before and I just forgot, but Were you aware that SUCCESSION was at least partly inspired by Ghislaine Maxwell's dad?
See, @bsky.app, this is a good example of bad communication. The first impression is the headline, which only says "SHOW WHEN YOU'RE LIVE", and the reader's brain fills in "ON BLUESKY"--you know, the app that the user is using? No one wants their online status to be visible here. Visceral dislike.
