Hands-On Training Sessions

These limited-enrollment sessions are available to medical students, residents, and advanced practice clinicians in training (including Nursing, NP, PA, and CNM students).

Spots fill on a first-come, first-served basis, and conference registration is required.

In 1993, MSFC was founded by medical students in response to the significant deficit of abortion education in their medical training. 🩺 Today, our MSFC community has 287 chapters in 28 countries.

Student Poster Presentation Session

The purpose of this session is to showcase qualitative and applied research in contraception, abortion care, and family planning and promote the vital work of MSFC chapter members and alumni in alignment with our mission.

Student poster presenters will receive complimentary conference registration, including meals during the event.

Abstract Submission Deadline: Thursday, August 20th

Student Poster Presentation Spots Awarded: Monday, August 24th

Abstract Submission Guidelines:

The abstract should be a 150- to 250-word paragraph that provides readers with a quick overview of your research.

Abstract submissions will be accepted if they include a clear and brief statement on the research purpose, the methods employed, the findings or results, conclusions, and recommendations or significance for your field.

The designated poster presenter(s) must be available in-person to discuss the research presented during the poster presentation session at the conference on Saturday, December 5th, from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm.

The poster presentation session is not a formal presentation and will be an informal discussion with conference attendees.

🚩 Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs), also known as fake clinics, are intended to discourage people from accessing abortion care. Some even open right next to real health clinics to cause confusion.

Avoid Crisis Pregnancy Centers

CPCs are FAKE CLINICS that spread misinformation and discourage people from accessing abortion care.

How to spot a CPC:
Claims to offer abortion services but won't provide or refer you for an abortion.
Pressures you into continuing a pregnancy.
Discourages the use of birth control and condoms and doesn't provide them.
Expresses judgmental views about sex before marriage, single parents, and LGBTQ+ people.

Fighting the Criminalization of Pregnancy Loss - If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice

This session will discuss how prosecutors and the State work to paint patients as criminals, and how medical professionals have been instrumental in pushing back on that criminalization.

Attendees will come away with concrete suggestions for how health care providers can fight back against the culture of criminalization present in health care institutions today.

In this session, you will explore the various avenues of social change and how physicians and medical students make a difference in each part.

There is no one way or best way to advocate for justice. Participants will discuss the unique role of physicians in advocating for reproductive health across different avenues of social change, such as policy and legal advocacy, narrative shift, community organizing, and coalition building.

MSFC Joins the National Abortion Federation in Supporting Abortion Care and Access Throughout Pregnancy

Since the Dobbs ruling, many medical students learning in states with restrictions or total bans have seen family planning and abortion education erased from their medical school’s curriculum. Some medical schools have even banned MSFC chapter events where a speaker planned to discuss providing abortion later in pregnancy.

MSFC members represent the future of reproductive healthcare in the United States. It is critical that future physicians receive evidence-based training, regardless of where their medical school is located, so they can provide exceptional care to the communities they hope to serve.

MSFC applauds NAF for their leadership in this pivotal moment. We proudly adopt the policy position supporting abortion care and access throughout pregnancy and will continue to oppose policies that interfere with that care, including viability limits and gestation-based bans.

📅 Here is a timeline for planning a Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) Workshop for your next chapter event. This procedure is a safe and easy method of providing early surgical abortion. It's also used for miscarriage management, treatment of failed medical abortion, or endometrial biopsy.

One Month Before the Event

Reserve a room with tables for the hands-on workshop and advertise to other medical students.

Purchase papayas or other fruit 2-3 days prior to the event.* Tell MSFC if you are using a different uterine model so that we can send the appropriate cannula size.

*You may substitute large tomatoes, dragon fruits, or small cantaloupes.

Day of the Event

Set up the tables and pass around a sign-in list to collect participants’ names and emails.

Start with a presentation offering an overview of abortion care and MVA technique.

Have participants pair off and practice the procedure.

Immediately After the Event

Take apart, rinse, soak, and dry all MVA materials before sending them back to MSFC.

Pack the supplies securely in the original box and use the included pre-paid shipping label.

Follow up with MSFC by sending us photos, a testimonial, or students’ comments to students@msfc.org!
