So this is it. A Discord community where we can discuss social issues like queer politics in simple Japanese & simple English! It’s not just language exchange but community-building. Don’t worry about making mistakes or mispronouncing things because that’s 100% OK!

[Please share] ProgrezTribe is a community where social issues are discussed in simple language (Japanese & English). For fluent speakers English, it's a place to practice your Japanese & simple English, whereas for fluent Japanese speakers, it's a place for English conversation practice & learning how to communicate in simple Japanese.
We've all seen activist/academic events about ethnocentrism where all speakers are native speakers of Japanese. We still have to understand English to keep up with the latest queer politics. Our discussion tables are often exclusive to people with language disorders.
ProgrezTribe is an attempt to do things differently. We aim to be a space for everyone to feel heard and included regardless of their proficiency level.
In the community, we discuss things both internally & with guests. If you're not interested in learning Japanese, you can still join us & enjoy chatting with interesting people we invite.

I am building a community this year.

A screenshot of Masaki's quote-post, posted 2 minutes ago, of his own older post from September 25, 2024. The older post says, "How many of you would be interested in joining a Discord server where you can communicate, discuss queer issues, and enjoy language exchange with Japanese-speaking queers and allies in simple English and simple Japanese? Cuz I'm thinking of starting one." And the quote-post says, "Just to give you a heads-up. This might actually, finally become a reality. There'll be paid membership tiers because this is gonna be a very important community that I want to put a lot of my energy into, but I'm trying to come up with ideas to make it all worth it. Stay tuned!"

A student recently told me about Dyke Weekend. It's an all-inclusive 3-day retreat + workshop event in Japan for lesbian and bisexual women (cis and trans) that has been going on for OVER 30 YEARS.

The Women’s International Group gathered for the first Dyke Weekend (DWE) of politics and advocacy in 1985. Initially begun by lesbian feminists, the weekends were at first only open to those who identified as lesbian. The DWEs were expanded along the way to include bisexual women, with a policy in place for some years during the 1990s of alternating weekends between “lesbian-bisexual” and “lesbian only”. As we moved into the 21st century—and the expanded queer politics that came along with it—the weekends began officially including trans women in 2014.

Today, DWE is still active in bringing together queer women for weekends, which have grown to include workshops, seminars, guest speakers, sports and the much anticipated BBQ. DWE is a safe and encouraging space for women to explore, relax, contribute and catch up with the queer community.
DWE is an entirely volunteer run group of women interested in keeping queer women connected in Japan and keeping the queer community in Japan connected to the queer dialogue. All ideas and support are welcome and necessary to keep the DWE epic!
