finally got to the big clearout of art college stuff, this was 2nd year when I started with Chinese ink and either brush or bamboo pen. Transformed my drawing, because it forces you to commit to the line / stroke, no hesitation. #lifedrawing

a drawing of a seated figure, made with a broad brush with Chinese ink, the lines move from broad solid marks through broad marks with streaks from the bristles, to narrow lines with sharp turns. The whole figure is represented in an impressionistic way with only a dozen or so strokes.

the #medrese in #Istanbul, in 2009 #streetphotography #reportage I started shooting vertical panoramas after seeing Horst Hamann's photos of New York. I reposted one earlier, sadly not a great version; the book, New York Vertical, is well worth a look if you're into panoramas.

The ceilings are cream, but covered with patterned motifs, and the arches that hold the domes are painted in alternating brick and cream. There is an old, worn stone floor, and there are oriental rugs in deep red colours hanging on the walls. Small tables in the foreground have tops made of colourful patterned tiles. It's daytime, and the whole scene has a light, airy feel.

Almost straight down below, in deep shadow, are streets with cars parked, in the middle distance, still below the skyline, is a swathe of medium to tall buildings, and in the distance are skyscrapers white against a dull sky. There is a sense of depth, of distance, and of the city crowded with buildings and man-made structures of all sizes.

the ceiling of the medrese / nargile cafe in #Istanbul #streetphotography

A black and white photo of the ceiling of a one-time medrese which now houses several nargile cafes. The original ceiling is a row of small cupolas in stone with a paint or plaster finish; some of the plaster is flaking, but on some of it you can see calligraphic motifs. Harsh spotlights shine up from the foot of each cupola. In counterpoint to the ceiling's series of curves is a modern grid of steel bars supporting strip lights and heaters.

The stone floor has been washed down. In the middle distance a glass display case holds a dozen or so nargiles for sale. The light from the display case shines on the wet floor.

the nargile cafe late at night. The door into one of the side rooms has been closed but through the bars you can see the TV is still on. On the right of the image is the doorway into the kitchen. On the far wall of the kitchen hang the marpuc for the nargiles, the leather tube through which the air is drawn to the mouthpiece. On the left of the image is one of the wooden benches, and emerging from beneath the bench is a cat.

the nargile cafe, a darkened room with just a couple of lights on the high ceiling. All the benches are empty. The Arabic calligraphy is visible framed on the walls. At the far end of the room a single figure reaches for the switch to turn out the lights.
